Did not fish. After speaking with Mick the keeper/ghillie about current conditions (primarily the algal bloom) we decided against driving a collective 600+ miles. Will be back when conditions improve!!
Presumably, according to the powers that be at least, the algal bloom is 'a naturally occurring event'?

I expect my nil return was inevitable due to the excessive algal bloom, but then a nil return can happen in perfect conditions. At least this gave me an excuse for not catching! An enjoyable day nonetheless, on a well managed beat.

Fishing for salmon today, held no hope of catching a fish. The river was the colour of coffee due to excessive algal bloom, and there were incessant interruptions to fishing due to the passing of canoeists.
Surely, the numbers of canoes should be limited by the licensing of the canoe hire companies The licence fees to go towards the improvement and protection of the river's habitat. I think that I am right in my understanding that the canoe rental companies contribute nothing to the upkeep of the river habitat, yet they must be making significant profit from it.
The quality of the river water in Summer has to be reduced by the current levels of extraction of river water for agriculture which were set in the time before climate change.
I will be back again, in hope and preferably after a good week of heavy rain has flushed through the river .

Early start, mist soon burnt off to reveal a blue, cloudless sky. Temperature and brightness increased through to midday when it became too uncomfortable for me to fish on. A few fish showing lazily in the bottom of Vanstone early on, no sightings in upper pools. Algae starting to become nuisance. Nil return today but some interest, believed to have come from shad.
