Beautiful spot. Lovely day, one fish seen, nothing rising, nothing caught.

Lovely day but a little windy, sunny and river level low. Plenty of fly life but little sign of feeding fish. 2 brown trout, 1 on nymph from the deeper water and 1 sub surface. Saw an otter in the evening so moved!

Tough day, and blanked. Circumstances meant a late start and absolutely nothing happened in the way of significant hatches or fish activity from midday to 20:00. Some fish rising but very few and far between. Stiff downstream breeze not helping and river seems 6" lower than ideal. Brought one fish up to a 16 Para Adams on Penlanole Pool but everything downstream of this area utterly dead.
Lovely beat notwithstanding. Will try again.

Thought there would be more of an evening rise but no. Still managed to persuade a couple of 8" trout to a Kite's.

Social media seems to have been plastered with photos of large Usk, Taff and Teifi trout in the past week so I thought the upper Wye might be worth a try. I've only fished Craig Llyn before in late summer and autumn so it was nice to be there on a lovely spring day. There were only a few fish rising but having struggled in the morning using NZ style, I switched to very small cdc shuttlecock emerger with some success.
The numbers weren't huge but this was made up for by some wild browns of superb quality. The biggest went 2.5lbs (weighed in net) but perhaps the most satisfying was a 2-pounder picked up on a parachute Adams while prospecting in the pocket water below the flats. 5 of the others were around the 1-1.5lb mark.

This was my first visit to this beautiful piece of water but it certainly won't be my last!
Not having done a great deal of wading the huge gravel glide at the bottom of the beat was a godsend and confidence booster. However on this beat there are conditions to suit everyone - glides, riffles, broken water, gravel, boulder and bedrock (very slippery!).
There was a sporadic hatch of duns that the odd fish was sipping off the surface. I managed to tempt two 8' brownies with a drifted fly but none of the rising fish.
All this 20mins from home. I'll be back!

If I could only fish one beat for the rest of my life, this would be it. Dry flats, deep gutters, pools, riffles, the lot. Plenty of flies hatching. Easily accessible even with a dodgy knee. Abundant fry suggest it's heaving with fish. However a tight schedule meant I had to leave after lunch on a sunny hot day, and sadly I had nary a sniff of a fish despite several changes of tactics. I can imagine the evening would have been epic, so I'll look forward to returning.
A kingfisher in early morning sun was a happy bonus, as was dedicated parking right by the gate to the river.
