Fishing:Winter Grayling

Fished here again on Sunday as a guest of Shaun. Also fished some of Richards beat upriver. Many thanks both to Shaun & Richard ! River quite low and clear. Started with the French leader and nymphs up at Bend pool, 5 oos trout and 1 grayling from here. Worked our way steadily down the beat, taking fish on nymphs, and occasionally dries when some were spotted rising. Did not fish the whole beat, stopped where Shaun has done some work improving the flow on the far side - this has worked well too ! as we took 5 good sized grayling and Shaun had a 2lb + trout here. Moving upriver to Richards beat - very impressed with the mix of water types here too, took more good sized grayling, and a few trout too. Finished off when poor light made detecting takes difficult. Another brilliant day on 2 fantastic beats, many thanks again guys. Total prob around 35 / 40 trout & grayling to 2lbs+.

what a lovely beat this is!! as I've never fished this before I did not venture out to deep as my waders are rubber soled and as the write up states felt soles are a must. Smallest grayling 10 inches and the largest which was the first of the day a brute of 20 inches all the rest between 13-18 inches. Half fell for duo tungsten beads fished very deep and the rest to size 16 olive cdc dry patterns. Some of these pools are extremely deep and will most definitely hold some very sizable fish. I hooked and lost one on the dry which was also very big. a stunning and very well kept fishery, a pleasure to fish.

No surface activity on arrival and nymphs were ignored by all but two out of season brownies. One to hand at about a pound. Another self releasing mid air. From late mid morning there was a steady trickle of flies coming off and occasional rises. Grayling measured to 15 1/2 inches were taken on dries mainly and spiders (3) largely from the middle parts of turbulent pools. Despite the afternoon warmth takes dried up after 4.30 although rises continued on the flat water from tiny fish taking smuts. Another sizeable brown obliged but was lost as he swung downstream.
Another enjoyable day. Greeted by red kites wheeling low over the river, spotting bats on the drive home, not another soul seen all day; just what fishing should be about.

Despite good water conditions I fished through the beat once and didn't see or connect with any salmon. A very nice well maintained beat.

First time fishing this beat and was impressed at how well maintained it was. Parking and access to the river was very easy but it rained all day and the river was roaring down at pace. River still rising when I decided to call it a day at about 4pm and met up with another group who again had no
luck. We all decided that the day was a wash-out. We tried but were beaten by the weather conditions. Will be back as this is a very interesting beat.

After yesterdays rain I expected the river to be a lot worse than it was. It was up a bit but still clear enough and well fishable. Only fished the bottom of the beat because the top stretch was running much too fast. Used French leader in the shallower parts and indicator and nymphs in the deeper runs. Plenty of fly life around but strangely nothing rising! Grayling to 16" and trout to 12".

Difficult day with the gusty wind, managed 6 grayling and 3 trout all taken on dry fly apart from 2 small trout early on with heavy nymphs. Landed 3 good grayling at the island all around the 18" mark.
