Very tough going in the sun. Just a few small chub on the float in the woods, then we moved down to the field by the parking. Lost one barbel later afternoon but only a few more chub on the float. Needs a bit of color.

The river was very full and coloured when I arrived and the banks where very slippery so needed to be cautious. I parked in the first car park at day break and walked the field and settled for a swim just inside the wood.
I was fishing with a 2lb test curve barbel rod and a 4000 reel loaded with 12lb main line. I had a 4’ fluorocarbon hook link of 9lb with a size 10 barbless hook. My bait was a drilled halibut pellet attached on to a hair and a pellet stop. I had a running rig with a 4oz cage feeder attached. The feeder was filled with a groundbait mix containing hemp, pellets and crushed boilies all fish/krill based.
I moved swims at lunchtime as had seen a few fish and had a few little knocks but no bites. Also a gentleman and his wife had started setting up exactly opposite me on the far bank. I walked back down the field to find another swim, because of the high water a lot of swims were not accessible or were not safe to land fish in due to snags. I settled on a swim opposite the first car park. I then caught consistently for the rest of the day.
The fish were in very good condition I let them rest in my deep landing net whilst I sorted out my unhooking mat, scales and camera. After each fish was weighed and photographed I put them back in my landing net to rest and recover before releasing. This did not take long as I had let them recover before photographing.
Unfortunately in the late afternoon I did see what appeared to be a small barbel floating belly up drifting down the far bank. I believe there was another angler fishing down stream of me who maybe able to verify that. The only angler I saw on that bank was the gentleman that arrived around lunchtime and started fishing opposite me, he was wearing an orange tee shirt and was accompanied by a lady.

A very enjoyable days fishing river high and coloured impossible to hold bottom in main flow so fished near bank slacks, feeder and pellet for barbel luncheon meat for chub. I would like to make a point regarding some of the comments in relation to amount of swims and access, even though the river was high, I had no problem finding and fishing eight swims during the day in the first field alone. If I had ventured into the wooded section there would probably have been more and I expect if the river was at normal level there would have been even more swim choice. There is a gravel track down to the river it is not full of potholes the only problem being if it Was very wet I think you would need a 4x4 but in dry conditions it is fine, the Wye is a wild river do not expect manicured pegs and easy access.
