Another wonderful day on the Wye. Started fishing at around 6am but wasn’t expecting much as the river was very low and the temperature was very hot. We fished the first crib and after getting some feed going the swim started to show signs of fish. Had 2 nice barbel and 3 chub by 10 o’clock and things started to go quiet as the temperature crept up, so at midday we decided to pack down & go to the pub for some lunch & get ready for the England game.
We returned around 6.30pm and this time decided to fish the Thomas Wood crib, where we had 4 more barbel & 2 more chub between us on the run up to dusk and into dark, followed by two rather large eels, which was our cue to call it a day. Beautiful venue & great access. Will be back again!

A very nice location, river low, a bright sunny day. Due to recent conditions I did not expect to catch any Barbel and did not, caught 3 eels instead, still a lovely day on the River

Conditions against us, boiling hot, river very low and clear. We fished too end of beat, in the woods, two other anglers fished lower down river, at the start of the woods, they also blanked, no bites whatsoever. The guide who looks after this beat is very helpful and lots of advice. Will go back when we have had some rain or gets cooler, great stretch of river and some good pegs, easy access to bankside, a good walk through woods to top end

four anglers on the water all blanked apart from some eels.
Very difficulty place to find and if it wasn't for a very helpful river keeper would have still been looking!
a lot of the stretch is unfishable due to high banks with few only a few swims cut out.
Quite a lot of slowish water probably better in the winter with a lot more water

Our first visit to Thomas wood and won't be our last. We always knew it was going to be tough with bright sunshine and very low river levels and this proved to be the case on the day. That said, Peter the fishery manager met us and gave us a great tour of the stretch pointing out the various features all of which looked very good for another occasion.
All in all a very beautiful stretch and one we will be back to later in the year.....rain gods please!

Arrived mid afternoon as the last of the canoes came through, texted Peter who advised me to try the Thomas Crib, i had settled into the first crib in the woods but 2 guys set up opposite so moved. 1st cast in 2nd swim had an eel and that was it. Fished till 7.30pm, river just too low and sky to bright but can see that this section should produce well in favourable conditions. The only strange thing really is that i would have liked to trot maggot and caster but you cannot do that on Wuf until September but if i had gone on the other bank i could have fished this method in the same water. May be this needs reviewing when sections are shared.
WUF Note: The date restrictions on the use of maggots on the Wye are an EA byelaw designed to protect salmon parr, although some fisheries apply for a derogation against this rule. Salmon parr are increasing in numbers in the main stem so, with owner approval, fisheries participating in the Passport will be sticking to this byelaw.
