12 x grayling 10-17 inches, 4 x out of season trout 6-12 inches, long trotting. The best two fish at 16 and 17 inches taken whipping a single maggot with a Tenkara rod. A very warm day, this one, although we didn't see any sign of the sun. River is now down to 0.47 metres and clear. Rather tattered looking salmon now in a number of the pools - I saw the first dead kelt of this winter.

A days trotting produced 14 grayling, 3 over the 1lb mark but there appears to be a large head of smaller grayling in my catch this year, good for the coming years. With no rain forecast...where to go next week?

Fished the lower half and though the water was at normal level there was very little moving. Fishing with weighted upstream nymphs I only managed to catch two decent sized grayling but as always, a very enjoyable day on one of my favourite stretches.

10 x grayling 10-17 inches, 9 x out of season trout 6-14 inches, long trotting. After a virtually frostless Autumn, Winter seemed to arrive with a rush. Freezing fog and minus 2 degrees in the Irfon valley this morning and rod ring icing problems continued until midday. Grayling seemed slightly stunned at the change as well they might; the water was quiet until the sun came out during the afternoon and fish began to bite. Even so, trout seemed to dominate a number of pools. A beautiful Irfon sunset before the temperature dropped below freezing again as darkness fell. Note to self: it's definitely time to change to neoprene waders. Incidentally, both middle and upper parking areas are now a complete mess due to ongoing logging operations on the estate. You need a 4WD to park on either with much hope of subsequent extraction.

Fished here for the first time yesterday, river was a bit on the high side .79m at Cilmery, but was running clear, caught two medium sized grayling long trotting maggots, spent a good deal of time exploring the beat, as a result this possibly showed in my rather meagre catch.
However on reflection this was the right thing to do on my first visit and will definitely return, its a lovely location, and thanks to Richard he fishery owner for his help and advice prior to my visit.

Great day long trotting. Most fish around the 8-10 oz mark, but 2 notable grayling of 1.5lb and 2lb on a rising river (raining all day!). Started halfway along beat and went downstream. Stayed at Hampton Hotel in Llandridod Wells. Cheap and cheerful, clean and friendly with a great breakfast. A very memorable day all round.

Only 1 Grayling on a small bead headed pheasant tail. May have been better off trotting. My first time at Cefnilysgwynne, so called the owner Richard, who was very helpful and explained that the central parking would be unsuitable without a 4x4 due forestry work. There is a parking spot down a short path off the main path leading to a field through a gate. Unfortunately another fisher not realising the consequences had parked in the path so I had to park further away and walk back through a quagmire.
Still worth while, as the river was gin clear, with Salmon showing. Before leaving I sat on the bank for 20 mins and watched a redd for 20mins. I counted at least 20 salmon, some around 20lb in water less than 1ft depth. Fantastic to witness.

Found conditions slightly tough with the river right at the top of its range but we carried on. A few OOSB and 4 grayling not big fish up to 12" or so but enough to keep our party happy, this is a lovely area/beat though.

16 x grayling 11-18 inches, 18 x out of season trout 6-15 inches. Cloudy with occasional showers, not too cold. Still very high water at 0.70, too high for the fly rod I would have said, but running clear. I was aware more rain is due this evening and this might be the only fishing chance for a few days, so I tried trotting from various stances tucked under the bank. It worked out well apart from trout being a nuisance, with some very nice grayling in the bag, quite a number at 17 and 18 inches. Last year we had a lot of 16 inch fish; where will this year class be next season? Large dark olives hatching (but no rises) and salmon showing regularly over the gravel runs.
