A good day on an interesting beat. Access to swims is challenging at the bottom end and the much-referenced hill is really not for the faint of heart. All that said, our hard work was rewarded with some fine barbel in beautiful surroundings. The croys at the top end produced some unexpected fish from the deeper, slower water at the end of the day.

We arrived at 2.30pm, we were really looking forward to exploring this new beat. What a disappointment. There was no access to the river in the lower section of the beat. As for the top section, there is a day ticket water on the opposite bank so very very limited water. There are only 3 swims fishable on the whole beat. We will not be returning.

Fished top end early morning before it got too hot and fisherman on the far bank moved in. The lower part of the beat did not look promising in the low water and bright sunny conditions. Usual feeder method and pellet baits, all fish in good condition.

Good mornings fishing managing 7 barbel to just over 8lb. Fished the stretch below the woods amongst the weeds for a change and surprised myself with the fish I had. It seemed devoid of life so just goes to show.

First time on this beat for my friend and self. Parking and access are good. The hill to get to the lower stretch is interesting. Hot sunny day with low level and flow. We both tried all over with various techniques/baits to no avail whatever I'm afraid, even the usually voracious and numerous chub seemed relatively scarce. Unfortunately, first impressions tend to affect confidence and like an earlier reporter I'm unlikely to return to this beat.

Lovely beat and very scenic. Arrived about midday and struggled in hot bright conditions. Managed 1 chub and 1 barbel before going for lunch at the Green Man pub. 6 more barbel and 3 chub after refreshments. Will explore more of the beat next time, down stream of the hill looks very nice.

River very low with little flow for the Wye. Best barbel 7lb 8 oz and best chub 2lb 14oz. All caught on feeder fished halibut pellet - even the 2lb eel. We stayed at the Greenman in Fownhope which is excellent!

As others have commented, access and parking are excellent. The day was extremely hot and the flow above the boulder weir almost nil. Would have chosen to fish the deep water below the fishing hut but two anglers on the opposite bank were feeder fishing to my bank! Fished fifty yards upstream for three hours but couldn't buy a bite. Even though fore warned about the hill, I opted to move below the wood. I now know this to be a bridge too far for a man of my years. If you must attempt it, travel light enough to allow room for the oxygen bottle.
After four bite less hours I painfully retraced my steps and had a final hour below the fishing hut. Still not a twitch. Unfortunately not a stretch that I am likely to return to.

Having fished Lower Canon bridge the day before we knew the river conditions and were keen to make a start on a new stretch to us Fownhope 5. Finding the parking easily we loaded up the gear and made the relatively short walk through the field to the river. A quick look at the printed out beat map we made the decision to start at the furthest point down stream and work our way back up towards the car. This entailed conquering a hill as due to a landslide access through the woods is unavailable. I've not personally climbed Mt Kilimanjaro but feel after making the summit of the hill at Fownhope I'm more than ready! With all the gear making it over the hill and too the two available fields was a big effort but well worth it. There are several fishable spots and the use of spikes and ropes open up the availability to a couple more. Finding clear spots between the weed seamed to be the key and this stretch would seem to be home to shoals of chub. Having fished the morning with only chub to show, to K.B, for our efforts and the looming hill ever present for the return journey the call was made to return to the first field and finish the day there. Once back in the first field and suitably recovered from the ascent I dropped into the swim nearest the fishing hut and was soon playing a chub followed by the first barbel of the day. K.B was fishing slightly up from me and had got straight back into pulling out chub. As the day came do a close and K.B still only having caught chub he moved to the top of the stretch and fished off the croy landing a last gasp barbel along with more chub. The day finished with myself on 3 barbel and 1 chub too K.B with 1 Barbel 13 chub and one other, a nice small eel that amused me more than its captor.

All fish taken on feeder fished pellet. Started in top field early morning, this field is popular with dog walkers & after having a stick thrown into my swim closely followed by a big black flying dog I decided to move down the bottom end for some peace & quite. Had a couple of chub here, moved up into the fast water in the woods (not recommended unless your sure footed as you have to climb down a steep bank onto rocks). It felt like a proper wild fishing adventure & there were plenty of chub here. Booked this beat hopeing to contact some of the barbel that live here however they seem to be very far & few between on this stretch of river
