Area:Upper Wye
Beat:Doldowlod
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:2
Fished from about 12:30 to 15:30.
Covered the lower half of the beat (the gullys) Euro nymphing and suspended nymphs with no bites.
Very mild conditions with water temperatures between 8-12 °C, level around 1.1m on Builth gauge and good water clarity. Conditions looked pretty good so not sure what exactly we were doing wrong to get no bites.

First visit to Doldowlod which is a very nice beat with easy parking and access (lower part didn't fish the upper section). Like the previous day at Craig Lyn, good numbers of upwings and stoneflies about in the Autumn sunshine though again not many fish taking advantage. Once again Euro nymphing proved the way to go with a small pink shrimp on the dropper taking all the fish today. Only fished the lower part of the beat, concentrating on the slower edges of the streamy water. All the Grayling were around the pound mark with the 2 bigger specimens hooked managing to loose the hook during the fight, c'est la vie! Like Craig Lyn, wading should be done careful here as the river flows over bedrock for a large part of the beat and can be very slippery. Very enjoyable weekend fishing the Upper Wye!

What a pleasure it is to fish this beat in good conditions ( 0.5 ddol gauge) wading is a whole lot easier because when it's afoot higher ( what I normally get ) it can be hell!. However, the fishing was quite difficult and I had to work hard to catch. The annual migration of leaves has started which made fishing the gutter awkward! Fish caught along the whole length( lower beat) using euro nymph and they were all of a good size.
Grayling to 14" and trout to 14"

River conditions high and coloured upon arrival. Levels, clarity and fishing improved by mid afternoon. Euro nymphing methods proved best in the conditions.

Difficult day on the Wye, we tried lots of nymph patterns nothing seemed to work. Then I tried a dry and had an immediate take from a grayling, which I failed to make contact with, thinking I'd cracked it I persevered on the dry for another hour with no success.
Switched to dry again on the upper part of the beat and finally managed three grayling, and a small trout between us.
Wading on the upper section was very slippery on the large boulders.
