Very very cold day with bitter wind and bright sun. No fish hooked and two small rises noted. There were some upwings about though. Highlight of the day was a large salmon that kept behind me and nearly gave me heart failure.

Was greeted on arrival by an otter fishing in the first pool by the car. Fished the lower half of the stretch and found the fish by Czech nymping in the fast water (they seem to be in the faster water this year, given the same flow). They were beatuies over a pound and were in fine condition. Later on I caught an out of season trout around 2 pounds in the gutter on the same method.

Grayling of about 14 inches on weighted pink bug. Lost/ missed a couple on the dry. Trout all took the dry. Fished red tag, grey "bumble"(can't remember proper name for it!) Fishing was hard work, very little showing but a great day all the same. Oliver Burch was great guide for the day.

The river was low and there were lots of leaves on the surface making fishing difficult at times, but otherwise the conditions seemed reasonable. We fished hard all day using every technique in our repertoire, including deep nymphs, duo style with dry and nymph, and dry fly on its own, but the return at the end of the day was one modest grayling each, caught on dries, plus one out of season trout. Another angler on the same beat with a guide was also struggling, so for whatever reason it seems that the Wye Grayling were not playing ball that day.

I have only fished small streams for the last two years so it took a bit of getting used to fishing something larger. A great day despite having to battle against a chilly downstream wind and a large number of leaves in and on the water. Caught two Grayling, one of which was about 14" and a nice OOS trout of about 15". All fish were caught on tungsten beaded nymphs with a bit of red or pink in and were caught in fast, shallow water. Frustratingly I must have lost close to 10 fish including several that took a dry fly. I can't help but wonder if it was just one of those days or if i was a bit rusty and doing something wrong. Saying that, catching a few decent fish on such a nice stretch of river at this pleasant time of year was all I needed.

lovely day to fish, water at a half decent level and plenty of fly on the water but the grayling did not rise all day. fished duo at the heads of the pools and all fell to size 14 4mm tungsten bead on the dropper. Nothing interested with the size 16 or 18 on the point. All grayling between 12-17 inches and trout to 14 inches. A lovely beat with some excellent water but the wading is as stated, extremely difficult .

Oh my, oh my!... disaster! I made my way to this beat and was very impressed at what I saw: riffles, glides, gutters pools, one grayling to hand in first 10 minutes of 16 inches. Then I noticed the water colouring very fast and huge amount of debris. I walked the length of the beat and what looked like very fishy water was engulfed by a raging torrent and that was that. This is great grayling water, sadly far to dangerous to enter the water when you have never fished it before.

The river was clear and the trees were staring turn into there autumn colours, so a good time to be on the water.
Had one oos trout on a nymph in the morning. There was little surface activity but when I changed to a 16 CDC & Elk in the afternoon the grayling came up,they were holding on the edge of the fast water and very willing to rise. Catching fish on a dry in Oct always seems like a bonus, so 8 grayling between 12" & 14 made for a very pleasant afternoon.
Many Thanks LB
