Dry fly Trout 10 ins

3 Trout, 2 Grayling

Blank I'm afraid, except for accidental trout. Another cold start with what felt like a heatwave in the afternoon.

This was my first day on the Wye this season due to the flooding which began the week the season started. The water was at a good height, and there was a large amount of fly life which was good to see. There were few takers however. I saw just a couple of trout but more grayling, I think they were.
I saw no salmon. I hooked a couple of trout, one of which was a good 2lb but lost both. Beautiful stretch of water. I am longing to return !

Spent the morning spinning Home Catch but only 1 small brownie caught. Was useful to use the boat as this allowed access to many pools which were tricky fishing from muddy banks. Moved down to above the waterworks late afternoon and fished the fly but still no joy.

I did not fish as the river was in flood - again!

A second day trying for a salmon, plumbing the pools with various sink tips - no joy I'm afraid. This was a dull cloudy day, but still quite warm for March. Again trout were rising for large dark olives which kept trickling off over a long period. A few march browns were on the water also.

1 trout of 23 inches caught. Estimated weight 4lbs. On salmon fly at bottom of Langoed Rapids.

River clear / 1.75ft and falling / bright sun

First time on this beat and after walking down to the bottom limit I decided to focus my efforts on the lower pools at the top end where the depth, pace and bend in the river suited Czech nymphing. The fishing was slow, which I expected on a cold day but my efforts were rewarded with six fish, nothing bigger than 14" but all in good condition.The catching flies were a peeping caddis, copper bead head pink thorax GRHE and an orange thorax Czech caddis all in size 14 on jig hooks.

Nothing caught, river coloured and high. Was there more for the practice than the catching.
