River very low and I managed to spook a large trout in the shallows early on. A hatch started about 11.30am. Finally I found a feeding fish and switched from my nymph to a dry quill paradun and a lovely 2lb+ fish was netted and returned. There was a lovely pool just upstream from the vicarage pool with at least half a dozen fish feeding but they did not like the look of my flies so I had to settle for one for the day. Certainly would like to return some day. One comment - why would anyone want to retain trout from here as the population seems fragile in number but of good average size. Lovely day.

Beautiful spring day. Very bright and warm. The river was right down to its bones and is in serious need of some rain if fishing is to pick up. LDOs hatching off from 11 reaching a peak around 12.30. Then some March Browns hatching (or are they brook duns?). The fish rose sporadically and were hard to tempt. I landed one beauty of 2.5lbs and another 1lb trout - both taken on a CDC Olive emerger. I also lost three other very good fish. Two went off with tremendous power and broke me off a rock and tree branch - the problem is you need light tippet to hook them, but this gives them the edge for the first part of the fight. The third was hooked in a fast gutter and just threw the hook. There were a few fish rising in the evening to spents, but they were in slack water and spooked on the first cast. If Tony Blair was a fly fisherman he would have shaken his head and said "presentation, presentation, presentation!" and he would have been right.

No fish caught, but lovely day out. Water low and clear, this coupled with blue skies made the trout we saw very skittish. Had a hatch of olives but only saw one fish rise in the day. W&U foundation very helpful.

A great day to be on the Usk. There was unbroken sunshine all day, and temperatures above 10 degrees. The Large Dark Olive hatch started around 10am and continued until 3pm, becoming fairly prolific at mid-day. There was also an occasional March Brown coming off. The trout rose freely for around an hour but it was all over by 2pm. Three trout caught; two over 2 lb (both 17") and one at around a 1 lb. The two larger fish were taken (stomachs were full of LDOs). Caught on baetis nymph and dries. I left just after 4.30pm, but didn't see any evening rise. I couldn't have wanted for a better first outing of the season. Thanks WUF!

2 WBT about around the 1lb mark on a PTN (Released). Water icy cold after overnight snow on the hills. Plenty of olives coming off but no rises. Lovely few hours. (Note to self: slight wader leak at the end of one season has tendency to result in a soaking leg at the beginning of the next.)

Rather difficult fishing today. The fish really were not feeding well today. The river was higher than we had expected and somewhat coloured. It was impossible to fish some of the stretch. We only managed to catch 14 smallish B Trout between us. We will be back to fish this lovely stretch of the Usk again.

Had an excellent day at Fenni Fach; first time on the Usk - beautiful river. I caught 2 brown trout - biggest about three quarters of a pound. Biggest of the day came off. The other rod blanked.

Even though it was very windy, it was clear and sometimes cloudy. It was in a sense an ideal fishing day.
I caught 3 wild brown trouts (around 7") with Elk Hare Caddis, Adams and Klinkhammer and they all were safely returned. Each of my friends caught a few brown trouts, too.
It was a fantastic day for all of us. We booked 4 rods (maximum 4 rods) on the day, but there was a guy who was fishing at our beat. We told him that he was not allowed to fish without booking and he just went away without saying anything. We were very disappointed to know that there was such a guy.
**WUF note** We are making enquiries into the extra angler.
