4 x trout 8-13 inches, spiders. A difficult morning with bright sunshine and a big temperature swing, from a slight frost first thing to 15 degrees at lunchtime. Almost no surface rises and trout which did come up to spiders were taking diffidently rather than confidently (blame the fish, not the angler!) I certainly missed a lot of slight plucks and pulls.

Productive lunch break at Brecon today. Good hatch of grannon & MB in progress when I arrived - heads literally everywhere. 5 small fish to hand in quick succession, lost a few, including a good fish.

13 x trout 8-12 inches, dries - Olive Jingler, March Brown Jingler, spiders - Waterhen Bloa, Dark Moorgame, Hare's Lug and Plover. River still pretty high - I funked fording it at usual places and went round via bridge - and not so very much in the way of hatches, but fish definitely prepared to come up. I'm told there was a good March brown hatch yesterday.

A tough day in pretty horrible conditions, especially the wind. The gauge was at 1ft with a slight tinge of colour. We saw a very sparse hatch of LDOs and no March Browns. 3 fish rose all day. Fish were taken on a spiders and dries with several more takes missed.

River looked very fishable with some fly-life but very little, if anything, rising. Tried nymphs but with little luck. Accessed the beat from downstream by the sewerage works. Bank well trodden by dog walking locals. Access difficult in many places and room for much needed improvement. All signs pointing to an over-fished town beat but am I making excuses for a blank day? Met and chatted to two other visiting anglers also not having any success. Saw some fish fry, dippers, wagtails, kingfisher and tree creeper.

After blank day yesterday heavy overnight rain lead to high and chocolate coloured river. Flashy caddis nymph at short range did the trick. Wading tough in places. Fish fat and feisty and very colourful. Happy man.

Three of us fished using the french nymph method and with success on the faster runs and tails into pools. The majority of fish were caught in and just downstream of the large pool on the main bend of the beat. The river clinches after the bend and provides a long run down the left bank which produced a large number of hard fighting brown tout and 2 salmon parr of about 15 to 20cm. Our largest brown trout was about 35cm and was very dark in colour. Caught from the deep section of the ledge below the bend.
