First time fishing this stretch of the Wye. Weather was overcast and the river was largely clear.
Our aim was for Grayling so we parked upstream of the bridge in the field near the rock pool, but finding canoeists already there we relocated downstream towards the fishing hut. By the time we'd got to the hut and tackled up the canoe team had drifted downstream and where still in front of us, so a quick walk downstream to the Rectory Pool/Rectory Pot section. I hadn't realised just how deep this section would be and trotting through the swim close in at 11ft depth I still wasn't dragging bottom (Waders beware.) We didn't manage to locate the grayling today but still caught 6 perfect trout on trotted maggot that were unhooked and released straight from the net. 4 small dace completed the day for us. One other note, as the canoeists drifted further downstream through the rectory pot they acknowledged us, kept well out of our way on the far bank and were very polite - no issues for us today. Great water WAU we'll definitely be back for more.

Hoping to finish the season off with a fish but no joy. Paddle boarders entered the river at Boughrood Bridge and travelled down through the beat. I told them they should not be there, only to be threatened to have my face smashing in. Not for the first time this season. Something needs to be done

I thought I was on to save another Rectory blank at 10.00am with what seemed to be a solid take in the Mill Stream to a #14 Usk Grub, but it was not to be. Fish on for a few minutes and we parted company when it turned on the barbless hook close in. Another for the “could have been” column I suppose. A coloured cock fish of maybe 8-10 lb.
On a brighter note, there were a lot of salmon showing today, particularly in the bottom of the beat, and a few appeared quite fresh. A rarity , as I haven’t seen around a dozen fish show like this, all season. Hopefully there is a decent head of fish moving up now from the lower river after the last spate.
P.S Many thanks to the fellow member rods that I’ve met on the banks this season, who have given advice and shared their knowledge of the GLLR beats.
Much appreciated.

No salmon caught or seen today.Fly moving nicely throughout the beat at 1’ 3”, on a promisingly overcast day so a little disappointing. If any fish were waiting in the lower reaches for last weeks rain, they appear to have moved on through now. A possible speeding ticket on the way added to a less than perfect day.
