Only 10” on the gauge this morning. Traffic diversions meant that I started later than intended so didn’t fish any of the salmon pools. Very good fishing with the trout rod though, most of the fish coming from below the bridge. There were a lot of good size grayling in the beat today, no specimens but many around 12-14”
A few nice trout up to 13” too. An Usk Naylor variant with a light blue dun hackle was again, the fly that the fish were most keen on. Taken as a BWO emerger perhaps?
It was raining witches and sticks at 5.15pm and the lightening was getting too close for comfort so called it a day. Interestingly, there were a lot of very startled cormorants and goosanders overhead at the time.

well we went up to the beat, set up walked all the way up to the top boundary and started to fish down. fished long and hard for no result or sight of a fish .Got down to the top of the Ferry pool , flicked the fly out to extend the line and bang into a fish . I could not believe it 20ft from the bank . A good scrap and a coloured 8lb cock fish came to the net. unhooked and returned to fight another day.
Fish caught on a home tied single hook Thunder and lighting in a dropper !!!!!!

Arrived at beat and went to hut to tack up. On threading my line through my reel came off, no biggy apart from the fact that the seat had come away from the reel. I carry a small set of screwdrivers so put it back as tight as my fishing buddy could do, but it failed so he had a gillie for the day, he gave me a go in the Willow pool where I had a pluck but no more, nothing seen or caught after that until he caught a salmon in the Ferry pool which I dually did the gilling jobs of netting and returning the fish. Better luck next time for me.

Didn’t arrive till lunch time but despite the nice weather it didn’t look liked we’d missed much in terms of fishing. The water was pushing through at a fair speed (we hadn’t checked the gauge the night before) and finding the fish was not easy. The most productive place was in front of the hut where the water was calmer. Managed to get 7 between us by the end of the day. As with recent trips the fly life increased in the evening but stopped again pretty quickly when the temperature dropped.
We will be off the Towy tomorrow abut looking at the weather for next week getting another trip in before the season finishes might be a struggle. Even if we do it’ll be dads turn to pay so last report for me for the season. Thanks to the WUF and land owners for making it possible to fish and enjoy the countryside. Already counting the days till March….
