Well this was never going to be an easy day was it? Bright and cold, with a low river.....and little insect life.

3 trout rods ventured forth none the less. First cast in to the flats by the hut yielded a 14" trout - but little else moving. However by dint of mobile fishing 20 fish came to hand - mostly trout up to 15" but a couple of small grayling too.

But then there were two 23" fish!! One was a female grayling. If you google this you might come up with a suggestion that an alaskan grayling of this length weighs over 4lb. We have caught enough to know that this fish didnt weigh that - was quite thin - but in good condition who knows? The other 23" fish was making its presence very conspicuous in the tail of Heirag - I suspected a trout and still thought as much until it was a rods length away at which point ... a chub! Never mind, a nice fish any way.

Also spotted a couple of clonking eels in Upper Heirag but didnt fancy those on a fly. So a challenging days fishing duly rewarded.

Nothing on dry, 3 beautiful trout under half a pound taken around 4pm on tiny midge wet. Not perfect conditions, however nicest bit of river been on for long time. Plenty to go at given a little more water.

The weather forecast, warm sunny intervals after the rain and cool, promised a much better day than my last Gromain session, last June. I was into fish from the off, eager, nymphing fish, taking my weighted flies on the drop. There were a few flies coming off, and I anticipated a decent crack at rising fish with dries later. However, hatching flies and rises were few throughout the day. The fish taken on dries were pulled up with klinks. It was still a good day, with my count being 25 up to 12 oz, including 4 grayling. A brownie of about 1½ lb was off after the third leap, and I pricked and turned a couple of beauties in the streamy water. All were released, some, sooner than planned! My friend had nearly as many as I, including a few grayling, a dace, and accidentally, a couple of shad which avoided landing.
Despite the lack of a sustained hatch and rise, it was a lovely day. If only there was a hatch forecast...

Landed 5 small trout and 1 shad ( max 12" ), all on GH PTN in the faster water. Lost another 6 on the way in, and missed about another dozen. Saw a few mayfly, but no rise, even late in the day.

A stunning location for a very memorable days fishing at Gromain. 6 Trout caught on mayfly nymphs, largest being 1 1/2 lb (all returned) - and seeing a very large Salmon in the shallows before it shot off into deeper water was a real bonus - thanks

6 small trout and 1 out of season grayling, nothing much over 8ozs, good fun though and a perfect weather until the thunder arrived in the afternoon. Fished New Zealand syle with all fish falling to the nymph. Only one take on the klinkhammer which I missed.

10 trout around 3/4 lb, 2 grayling around 3/4 lb, several salmon par. All caught on dry klinkhammers or f flies most in the afternoon.

At times couldnt see for the numbers of grannom in the air, I have never seen anything like this before.
