Very enjoyable day fishing a new beat (for me) on the Usk. Although the river was low there's a good variety of water available with classical pools, fast riffles and glides. Reasonable amount of upwings on the water but not many fish rising, most likely due to the bright sun. Caught fish from the riffles on either a #16 tungsten GHRE or #16 brown quill nymph. Varying sizes from palm of your hand stuff to a couple of fish in the 1.5lb range. Very good access and easy wading. Already looking forward to visiting again next season!

Water levels were good though the weather was dull and drizzly. A very varied and intriguing beat with deep pools, shallow flats and fast water. Using a gold head nymph took a couple of half-pound fish from a pool next to a raised beach below the road bridge (is this marked on the beat map?). Thereafter things went very quiet. Only there for the afternoon so did not have the chance to explore the length of this beat - apparently the upper section can be the most profitable.
On my next foray to Usk and Wye valleys will definitely return to try this beat. I have found the passport and Foundation generally incredibly helpful - they have really opened the door to me to all the marvellous waters in the Welsh borders and beyond.

Overcast and a good flow of water, but a brisk wind became quite a challenge. Fish were taken on small nymph patterns, and all safely returned.

Really nice and easy beat to fish, fished for 3hrs and only covered a fraction on the beat. Lost the best fish I hooked but had several over a pound and two nearer 2lbs. Fished the nymph for a while but most fish to the dry.

Arrived at the venue at 7:30am to find the river up some 1 - 1.5 foot and coloured. During the course of the day the level dropped considerably and the water cleared (but not completely). From both a salmon and trout perspective the conditions as the day progressed looked ideal. We concentrated on salmon fishing in the morning landing a few trout that took size 12 doubles. In the afternoon the trout became very active and were taken on both dry fly and nymphs. A lovely beat to fish with varied water and I shall return next season to fish for trout.

River had a tinge of colour and a little more flow after recent rain. Cloudy, becoming sunny around 1pm. A pleasant afternoon, becoming cloudy again with drizzle at 6pm. Air temp around 15C; water temp 13C.
No insect life and no rise. Tried everything - emergers, dry daddy, nymphs, fry imitators (had had good results with one of these the previous day, on a non WUF stretch). No trout caught! Better luck next time !
2 salmon seen at bottom end of beat.

It was casting practice more than fishing, water level was low anyway so not expecting anything. The resident Otter did not take kindly to having his mid morning bath disturbed, incidentally the fatest Otter I have ever seen. Trout were rising on occasion and some nice specimens could be seen in the shallows. Better luck next time.
