After a difficult day on the river a week or so ago (very low water) I had been interested to see that the levels had risen following rain in the following week. A very hastily arranged day off from work saw me heading up the A40 at just after 6 in the morning, arriving on the beat at just after 8am. The river looked in very good condition for barbel - good flow and colour - so I'd decided to start in the wood and make my way to the meadow if needs be. First cast produced a tap - a chub maybe? - that didn't develop. Second and third casts produced nothing. Fourth cast saw me latch in to and land an 8lb barbel, and the next six or seven casts were just as productive. I ended up with 8 barbel between 5 and 8 pounds and a solitary chub. By about 1.30pm, having endured two or three uneventful casts, I had to conclude that the fishing had switched off - as it does so often in the middle part of the day. I decided at this stage to head home, I'm sure that the afternoon and evening would have produced as well but I'm not that greedy! Wonderful day's fishing on one of my favourite beats, when the conditions are in your favour it really does make all the difference!!
Whilst I did have the chub and one barbel on meat, the most successful bait on the day was hair rigged 8mm pellet, either a pair or a triple, wrapped in a paste made out of the groundbait. To be honest I was surprised not to see more chub... and for once, no eels! (Though I seem to be in something of a minority in that I actually like them!)
Thanks to all at WUF and Don the fishery owner. Hoping that there may be one more visit before it gets much colder.

Tough day after very low overnight temperatures of 4 degrees, water level falling from 1.1m. Moved several times between end of wood crib and through to the end of Legg Meadow. All fish caught close in.

Had a great day here a month ago but arrived to find river really high and flying through. Settled into the meadow area but very difficult and could only fish close in. After some advice from the ever helpful Don we managed to winkle a few out late in the day under the rod tip.

Fished the morning, 2 barbel not weighed but one probably close to doubles, one 8+. Pub for lunch, and came out to find a different river, up a lot and all manner of debris coming through. Had to abandon as a result. Came up over 0.5m morning to aft. Lovely stretch, will return, but bring lots of tackle as its a minefield! Thanks

Still some extra water but this dropped during the day, the river lost it's colour and the weather became slightly colder. However, Chris was at it again, landing 4 of the barbel (including another near double at 9.13), As on the previous day, all fish were caught on pellet (one chub was over 5lbs).
Well done to Chris who accounted for 20 of the 26 barbel landed during the 4 days-not sure what that says about us 2 other also rans-we'll try harder next year!!
As always (this is our 5th annual trip) a very enjoyable few days spent in this beautiful area-it's good to catch fish, but it's great just being here. Hope to catch up with you next year Don!

It was a shock to see that the river level had risen considerably overnight as there had been very little rain locally. Weather humid, water coloured and fast flowing, but without the barrage of debris that we experienced on Monday. All fish caught on pellet and included 2 barbel doubles (10.7 and 10.2) and chub to 4.6. One of our contingent (Chris) accounted for all of the fish except the 10.2.-what a day for the boy!
