Nothing moving all afternoon but hooked a couple around 5 and landed one. Too small to keep. Took a little brown nymph drifting across the current at bottom of the beat

Great session today chub feeding throughout the session all on either meat or pellet. Couldn’t get through to barbel but that didn’t detract from a throughly enjoyable day.

Largest chub 5lbs.

ACCESS ISSUE: Started badly when I really hurt my back trying to open and then close the first gate which has to be lifted, weighs approx 2cwt and is hanging by one hinge. This is no longer a gate. Subsequent pain made wading difficult.
Gusty downstream wind didn’t help finding bottom when nymphing but it’s probably my fault that I only touched a couple and didn’t connect.
POACHERS: The afternoon was made exciting but in a negative way, when two poachers who I had flushed out issued brief but very nasty threats from the road bridge. I had already contacted the EA number and reported them. They were very well equipped, using spinning gear and clearly knew what they were about. But I really couldn’t relax afterwards as they knew where I was parked and my fevered imagination had my van (or me) being trashed and I didn’t go exploring. Not my best day. I couldn’t shut the gate by the road and I don’t think other rod had been able to either.
Massive hatch at end of the day, very little sign of active fish. But it’s always good to get out.

No fish caught, and whilst talking to anglers who had been fishing all day, the reports were poor. Only heard of one fish being caught. Conditions were perfect really, but nothing rising to the fly and no fly life observed. Stick to the rivers I think!!!!! As an aside, there were at least 20 cormorants actively feeding around the reservoir.
