Salmon Parr caught in the island swim, 3 small brown trout caught either side of the bridge. River was higher than normal and quite coloured following heavy rainfall. Water quality was poor and smelt quite unpleasant, insect life in the river appeared low with very few fish rising at all even well into the evening.

No fish taken.

The beat fished quite hard through the day- but two trout caught in the end, with the best at 16" on a sedge, late afternoon. A hard on light tackle- glad I was fishing strong, 6lb tippet.

I also missed some others on dries and had a smaller fish using a small Woolly Bugger streamer. There are some fine fish here, but the feeding spells can be short.

A really tough day with conditions far from ideal, the river was running high and was very discoloured following some heavy rain, making fishing tricky. I couldn't tempt anything with nymphs or streamers in the deeper pools but fished the shallower ripples towards the end of the session and had two fish take my nymph, with the larger fish spitting the hook during a mighty leap and the second fish of about half a pound graciously coming to the net (and returned safely to fight another day). Thanks to Barry for taking the time to talk to me on the phone and for passing on his recommendations. A beautiful beat and I will be back to fish it again in hopefully better conditions.
