Great day. River was high and coloured, with lots of fly life. Two on nymphs, one on the dry, three on the streamer. Strangely the fish weren’t interested in the hatches up top. Still enjoyed a super day.

Hoped for some trotting but the river came up over half a metre overnight so spent the day roving the section with the feeder rod. Caught chub from most swims and found barbel in just one - close in the slacker water in the morning and then further out in the flow in the evening once the water had dropped about 20cms.

Hard work today, even though the water looked good. Few feeding on the surface, and nothing over 6oz. But nice to be there.

The river was rising with a lot of debris coming down , so made fishing difficult . I was disappointed with my first Wye and Usk passport , website made it sound like it would be exclusive to anglers and said we were not allowed to visit the water until the day we booked , but on our day the whole area was full of dog walkers hikers , picnickers, cyclists even launching a home made sail boat in the swim we were fishing, kids swimming and shouting where we were fishing and lots of the beat completely unfishable due to lack of pegs 45 is not cheap for me and was meant to be a treat and father and son time but was noisy and anything but peaceful , really disappointing.

Fishing Passport Note : It is mentioned on the Caradoc website page that during hot days, particularly at weekends, other river users can sometimes be present. Apologies if you missed this. We will try and make the message clearer.

Fished with my brother today, caught six the biggest 19" and he had a few more including another beauty of 16"(report to folllow). We were bit worried about the weather on arrival as there had been a fair dump of rain overnight. On arrival the river was up about a foot and rather colured, visibility about three feet. Few insects and nothing rising but we did pick up the occasional fish on nymphs. Later on the water cleared a bit and some caddis, and a few olives got going - the odd rise then and we got a couple on Klinhamers but most were on nymph today. The 19"er gave a good scrap in the strong flow, I was worried she would power off downstream but thankfully managed to guide her into a slightly slower eddy. Beautiful fish, and rather different in appearance to many other Usk browns - olive with few, faint spots, although still with that wonderful gold colour around the head and underbelly and in lovely condition. All fish returned as usual. Thanks for a lovely day out!

Everything seemed in place for a great days fishing , river levels up , nice chocolate colour, slightly overcast and the temperature perfectly mild . We were feeling more than confident. Our confidence gradually turned into frustration as we realised it was going to be a tough day , waiting and waiting with no signs of any activity,
We were prepared to write the day off , what a contrast from my last visit only a month ago , when the conditions were a complete opposite.
But as the evening came to a close the fish took pity on us and our rods came alive with some last minute action which lifted our spirits.
A very testing day but a blank avoided.
