Beautiful day on this lovely beat introducing my 10 year old son to river fly fishing.Lovely welcome from the owner at Penpont who showed us where to park and how to access the river. Lots and lots of moving fish but couldn't find the dry to tempt them - we literally were casting onto their heads at times. Switched to a single size 16 hare's ear on an indicator and got some takes. My son hooked and lost a very good fish using this method. Tough beat but a lovely day followed by dinner at The Griffin at Felin Fach which more than made up for our blank!

1ft 1 inch on the gauge, running clear, but no catch. Before the sun got on the water, a fish hooked in the Rectory Neck on a size 10 Bann Shrimp. It backed steadily down into Rectory shaking its head until eventually the hook pulled. Another test of character.

First time on this river . Fantastic setting . But it is very rugged , not that many accessible swims for coarse fishing . River was running at a steady pace . Holding bottom with 3 oz . Never had first bite till 4 , lost one , landed one 8 lb 6 oz . A lot of canoes. But I did expect that as it was a bank holiday. I would definitely give it another go.

Lovely day, sunny with clouds, river level lowish, clear and falling slightly. Big hatch of flies and fish steadily rising on gravel flats. Fished between 11.30 and 2.30. Only 3 smallish grayling caught, a couple more lost and what was probably a larger trout swirled at a salmon fly being worked down a rocky gutter on One Tree catch. Should have had more! Small downstream olive nymphs working best. Area fished - Long Stream down to Coed Cowyn pool. Sat quietly on bank for an hour and wonderful to see 4 definitely, possibly 6 kingfishers flying up and down river and very close to us, also a dipper and a woodpecker.

Still no sign of salmon on this beat. Perhaps it needs a few days of heavy rain to get them to hang around. But it was a lovely day and I had some fun in the evening with my trout rod.
