Four seasons in one day weatherwise, early morning drizzle turning into heavy rain and strong winds which cleared up by 12pm and settled leaving clear skies.
Struggled for some time on the upper part of the beat but found some fish down below the island. The fish are still hard to come by and not moving far from cover, but managed to take 2 grayling, the best just over a pound on very small nymphs fished deep but not hard on the bottom. Took a half pound trout in a deep run directly below the island to finish.
Some evidence of a hatch or two. Very small midges and later some uprights started to come off, Baetis would be my guess
Enjoyable day to start the season.

Nothing caught. Two or three fish rose on the lower flats to some dark olives for about half an hour around lunchtime and I am afraid I left an Imperial in one. Rather clumsy.

Lovely beat to fish. All the barbel came in one swim, but there are so many swims to choose from and they all look productive.

Drizzle in the morning, brief sunshine in the afternoon and a chill wind. River was slightly coloured but looked fine. Saw perhaps half a dozen upwings come off the water around 1pm, but didn't spot any trout.
Fished nymphs without luck and wrapped up just before 3pm as I started to get a little cold. Despite the chill, a really beautiful spot and always enjoyable to spend a few hours in peace listening to the sounds of the river.
Most exciting moment of the day was while changing flies standing in the tail of the pool just upstream of the bridge. A cormorant that had clearly submerged itself a long way upstream suddenly surfaced a couple metres in front of me and took off in a panic. I nearly had a heart attack.
