Beat:Backney (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Really pleasant day; river low and clear so not ideal conditions but 3 barbel to 8.4 and 3 chub to 3.8 caught on bread and sweetcorn hookbaits.
Saw a pair of peregrine falcons around the big bend at the downstream section of the fishery.

Beat:Trout fishing on the Usk

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Day 1 - Dan Y Parc
5 trout, 2 dace - largest to 1lb. Trout to nymph, dace to dry fly. 5 rods on the beat which was a bit of a surprise. Not huge amount of insect life/rising. Water very clear.

Day 2 - Glan yr Afon
8 trout, all to nymph. Largest 3/4 lb. Only rod on the beat, and very much upstream nymph territory. Limited rise just above the island mid-morning.

Day 3 - Dinas & Abercynrig
9 trout, largest 1 3/4 lb. Caught on nymph and dry (klinkhammer). V good day's fishing only spoilt by ripping waders on barbed wire... Mid-afternoon rise productive, and also late evening rise. Water very clear.

Day 4 - Fenni Fach
3 trout, largest 1/2 lb if that. This beat flatters to deceive. Had to work hard for these small trout. The other rod was no more productive.

All in all an enjoyable and tiring few days. The river was very clear and consistently falling - more insect activity and it could have been a bonanza!

Beat:Luggsbridge (B35)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Sadly the day I booked on the Lugg never happened due to work commitments but I did manage to walk a good stretch it and will return in Oct for some trotting and piking thats for sure. This little river is perfect for roving even though there has been some serious bank clearance and tractor assisted swim construction if you want to sit it out and wait. It does look like a serious chub/Pike/perch river come late autumn given the amount of features there are ,unbelievable to think its only about a mile out of the city centre.
Not all of the river is fishable due to serious undergrowth and high vertical banks but most of it is walkable with the help of the paths that have been cut through the woods, the lake looked stunning in early morning sunlight but a bit low and snaggy to be honest.
Definately worth walking through for a couple of hours before fishing.

Beat:Upper Bigsweir

Fishing:All Species (in season)

No success unfortunately at Upper Bigswear on the Salmon front yesterday. I noticed several salmon leaping on the far bank of the triangles pool. Not all at the same time I hasten to add.

Beat:Whitehouse (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

We started fishing for Barbel using halibut pellets and SBS Barbel Hookers at 10am. The Barbel started to feed at 11.00am and continued feeding through til dusk but prime time was not so good as speedboat disturbed the swim in both directions for about an hour. However this did not totally ruin our day as total Barbel caught was 21! (to
8lb 6oz).

Many thanks Wye & Usk for a great day - hopefully will be back soon!

Beat:Caradoc (R. Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

My first visit to the Wye and, coming from thr Essex coast, my first visit to moving water for some years! Wasted the morning in an inappopriate swim. Moved downstream and managed to catch a few fish - best being a barbel of 6lbs and a chub of 3lbs. Lost two, what fought like, large barbel. Will definitely want to return.

Beat:Cefnllysgwynne (River Irfon)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Cool and quite bright in the morning but rather sunny and warm by evening. Light breeze. Water low, rather clear.

19 grayling on small dry. Several around 1 lb, two over 1 ½ lb. 5 browns, three on dry, two on nymph. Largest 10 in.

A lovely, secluded beat on a beautiful part of the river. A very pleasurable day. Thanks to Charles Picton for a good beat summary and excellent suggestion of fishing methods. A big thank you to Charles and than WUF.

All fish carefully and safely released.

Beat:Lower Carrots and Luggsmouth

Fishing:All Species (in season)

1x small barbel, 2x chub. Cold wind and lost a lot of gear due to snags and rocky bottom. Gave up early as the temptation of ale and a curry proved too much.
