Hazy sunshine then strong hot wind. Val took a half pound fish from the Bottom Pool in the morning. Three more small 8-10 ins. fish were taken on small adams in the pool near the top on the bend, where the challenging wind was less of an issue, and finally a one pound fish on a suspended nymph, lower down the beat where the rock ridges cross the river. Five fish for the day-best fish a pound. All returned. We noted that the sand Martins nesting last year below the bend at the top of the beat in the earth bank have moved to Sewage Pool- maybe because of the earlier floods?

The weather was far from suitable for trout fishing (28 deg C in Leominster) and the river was quite coloures.
The mayfly hatch was sporadic to say the least, but we did manage a couple of fish (best 12").

Both rods caught small brown trout on the upper part of the beat. Small cdc emergers and ptn the most successful flies.
Please note that the installation of a new fence at the top end of the beat has severely limited access to the water.

After a long walk up through woods to discover the end of the beat, we were rewarded with a fantastic stretch of river with which to try our luck. Wading was fairly easy with little of the treacherous river bed boulders and slabs experienced in other stretches of the Usk. We both fairly quickly managed to bag an 11" trout on dries in fast water. Further up river the opportunites reduced a little and in some places, fallen trees and deep water made access a little challenging. Sport slowed later in the day but we had some chances and missed them. Up river from the road bridge worth a try but on water wasn't quite as nice as the downstream stretches. All in, a fantastic day in truly awesome surroundings. Hope to be back soon.

Our usual tactic - two rods fished alternately. Great for fish spotting and getting flies out of trees! A smorgesbord of olives hatching but also quite a few mayflies although the fish dont seem to sure what to do with these ariel monsters just yet. Fishing challenging as always but 6 wbt - 5 in 10 to 12" class, all fat fish in superb condition - seemed good reward for a hard days work. We left the seriously big fish for other rods....
Saw a crayfish casualty. Are these white claw or signal on this water? Oh and a pair of mergansers. Otherwise superb day in fantasctic surroundings - thanks once again.
