Another great day on the Wye. Grayling in short supply.
Salmon even rarer. No rise to be seen, but some fly life coming off. water a bit high and coloured, great for salmon, but none seen.

Fished on the 7th and 8th in beautiful conditions. All grayling on the 7th followed by 2 grayling and two trout on the 8th, to spiders and goldheads.
Thanks to Chris Price, who was guiding a salmon angler on the 7th, for his sound advice. Much appreciated Chris.

A bright and sunny day with water levels down. Little or no surface activity most takes on goldheads. First time on this beat which is well maintained and certainly worth another visit.

First time fishing this beat and struggled to connect with the grayling. The five to hand all between 12-16 inches , the trout mainly small. Fished from 12-5 pm and saw 5 rises from grayling and only a couple from trout. I opted to Czech nymph and maybe should of got out the french leader as takes were very subtle. Did try the dry for a while in the runs but sadly only salmon parr came up and after a few it was back to nymphing.

This beat was fished by three members of the Grayling Society on this occasion. The river was running clear at 12C and was well up owing to compensation water from the Elan Reservoirs. All fish were caught on nymphs either fished in 'duo' style or as a team.

I did much better than expected on a very hot sunny day (24 degrees) with a nasty upstream wind in the afternoon hampering decent presentation. Water temperature was 17 degrees - the main stem of the Wye (Ddoll Farm) had been dropping rapidly over the previous 48 hours but compensation water from the Elan had topped this part of the river up from Saturday evening onwards. Fresh compensation water can be bad news but maybe 36 hours or more had been just long enough to let fish settle down again. There was little fly until a few sedges and olives appeared in the afternoon. In the morning, only a few trout rose but in the afternoon the grayling were looking up as well. Almost all fish were caught on a small HE emerger, with a heavy flashback PTN also nailing a couple whilst bugging in the morning. Most of the trout were caught in the morning and most of the grayling in the afternoon with about half being non-rising ladies moving to the emerger. Trout ranged from 9-12" and grayling from 9-14" (quite a few 12, 13 and 14", ~ 1.25lb, fish on this day). Hard!!

No fish but that will be down to my lack of fly fishing experience. Great location.

In spite of the low river and the nasty down stream wind, the Grayling were up for it today. Second thoughts, make that "down for it" - with most of the fish taken on a tungsten nymph. Some good fish, a handful at 12" plus, with the majority in the 10-12" bracket. One Trout at 14", others smaller. On one of the few occasions when the wind dropped, I switched to a dry; and caught half a dozen Salmon Parr in rapid order. Tres bonne
