Fished on the evening ticket and just for the last couple of hours as the sun dipped low on the Beacons.
Water temp 19c so just about doable but nothing moving at all , no spinner at all late on or sedge and even the quarry pool didnt have its usual sippers . Tough times eh.
The water was quite fishable in the runs still and the wading was fine , no slime/algae and the river bed looking fine still where there was moving water.
The very considerate farmer there has now erected a stile at the entrance gate by the road and covered the barbed wire with sacking . Always used to be a bit of a wobble here !Splendid chap!
Also, he has taken the barb wire of the gates within the fields.
A nil return but always a real pleasure to be here.

Day before forecast heatwave.
Touched a few fish with nyphs between bottom boundary and the Cilieni junction. Saw and touched nothing in the Junction Pool itself. The only rising fish seen were in the Quarry Pool. An egret lifted off from there when s/he spotted my approach. Heron and cormorant also seen on beat.
As always in the quarry for me , they played hard to get, though they showed a bit of interest in a nondescript size 18 grey dry fly. Couldn’t see the insects they were rising to.
As for insect life, localised midge swarms and a few olives here and there.

Picturesque little spot on the Usk. Fairly accessible but slippery under foot. River was rather changeable, with initially good low and clear conditions; rapidly changing to faster, deep and slightly murky. 2 wild brownies caught on nymph in the mid - late afternoon. Both fish returned.

3 trout on nymph teams. One or two on/offs. Plenty of airborne insects but localised, sporadic rises only.
Pleased to see some action has been taken on difficult field entrance (see pic). Safer now. Thanks to Wuf and/or farmer.

What a hard days fishing! The weather seemed perfect, water temp was okay but nothing hatching, just a few here and there. Even when sight fishing nothing would tempt the trout up. I managed one by swinging a wet spider down a riffle and that was it.
On the upside, I lovely beat with some great water and holding spots. The pools looked like on a good day they would come alive. We will be back and hopefully have a day when things SWITCH ON.
