We started early to avoid the heaviest rain but no fish were seen, nor indeed a single fly, in over three hours’ fishing. Very cold and wet by 1.30 when we decided to call it a day. A very nice piece of water, however, which will be re-visited in hopefully more promising conditions.

Not the kindest of weather - cold and wet. Managed to land 3 WBT - one off the top in the brief hatch that lasted at least 5 minutes, the other to nymphs. All from the top of the beat and were returned safely.
Brecon Webcam: 1'2". Good amount of water and surprisingly clear.

A very tough day, wet, cold and just dead for the most part. Slight rise in temperature saw a sparse hatch, with 2 fish landed in the space of 10 minutes. Both 10 to 11 inches.

River a little too high/fast for effective trout fishing. Fantastic looking beat though!

On the water from 10 until 3. All pools visited. One bite and one rise seen. Some heavy rain followed by sun but no hatches . Water fast and clear to about 18". Gurneys of Ledbury chicken and ham pie thoroughly recommended though. Look forward to trying this beat when the water is a bit lower.

Only fished the afternoon. Pretty miserable weather. Strong wind and persistent rain. Upstream nymphing produced one brown on a PTN nr Quarry pool. Still enjoyable and will return again.

3 brown trout, all released. Arrived just after noon and there was a decent mayfly hatch on, mostly iron blues. Strangely I didn't see a single rise, but they were taking below the surface - caught two lovely fish of 14.5 and 14" on nymphs within c. 30 mins. Thought it was about to be a red letter day, but then the hatch petered out and it was rock hard all afternoon - nothing rising, tried many flies but no bites until a few mayflies started hatching again towards sunset. Then it was like a switch had been flicked and a few trout started rising - caught one more of 8" off the top on a size 14 Adams (some medium-large mayflies with light greyish/yellow colouration also hatching about this time - maybe large spurwing?). Another stunning Usk beat, thoroughly enjoyed it even in the quiet spells. Lot of dipper and kingfisher activity (one dived and caught a small fry about 10m from me at one point!), also an otter spraint near the beat start. Nice to see the river carrying more water after the rain last week too.
