Beautiful beat with the air temperature high hatches were non existent until later in the day the morning was hard work but still managed 9 blind to dries. Once temperatures cooled took the remainder of the fish mainly to dries but some to nymphs but a great day all fish returned and wet wading the order of the day

A very enjoyable day on this beautiful beat - significantly enhanced by lots of advice, and a complete setup overhaul, from owner Shaun. (One should try his 'regressive energy' leader setup to achieve absolute minimum drag for the dry fly.) Fish were taking the dry opportunistically, with 3 grayling to 13" (and lots missed) and 5 trout up to 17", with the 2-pounder taking the sedge (14) in the dark and giving me a fair battle. Water temperature, improved by dam release, at about 16 degrees.

Where do I begin to describe this wonderful day! Wow!
First of all I'd like to make a shout out to Rachel and Shaun who are the most welcoming, lovely hosts. They are happy to share advice and keep you posted on the conditions and where the fish may likely be on the day. You don't don't get that everywhere, so thank you guys!
Water conditions were slightly lower than average and clear. Weather was mild and slightly cloudy with a few spouts of sunshine which was warmly welcomed.
My fishing buddy Phil & Myself started at the very bottom of the beat and decided to work our way up stream mostly targeting the faster water. We stuck some general size 14 river nymphs (Hares ear with peacock collar) on under sheeps wool indicators and boy, it all kicked off from about the 3rd cast.. Phil had 9 grayling in the first half hour, (2 of 41cm) which was fantastic for him as he is new to fly fishing. I had 3 on the nymphs but very soon switched over to a dry fly and focused my attention on trying to pull some fish up to the surface having seen sporadic caddis hatches. 17 fish in the first 2 hours.. it was so much sport!
The rest of the day we focused more on some faster moving dry fly water in the middle to upper stretches normally just a bit further down from the heads of the pools and it was a super successful 2nd half with 90% of the fish falling to small size 16 CDC caddis imitations, size 16 hares ear klinkhammers and CDC emergers. We ended up with a handful of decent trout (around 20 - 25cm) in between a substantial number of grayling, all the fish fought really nicely and made for good, non stop action all day!
I can't wait to return, thank you Craig Llyn :)

We were relieved to find the water temperature to be 17.3 deg c despite the recent weather. It was hot, most taken on nymph in faster water. Not many rises but managed to tempt a few with Kites imperial, DHE and Cock winged dun. A good half dozen of the Grayling were in the 1.5 to 2lb range.
A smashing day on the water.

Daytime high of 26°C; 10°C at 10 p.m.
Dry-fly fishing and nymph from 11.amto 10 p.m.: 10 graylings and 3 trouts. Best catches: one 20 cm trout and one 40 cm grayling.
BWO and emerger fly used. Water level perfect.
The temperature was too high, and the fishing was different from the day before. Despite Shaun's advice, it was impossible to arrive earlier in the morning, when there was more activity.

Hi,
My son fished during the day but it was sunny and hot and not much movement. The beat is owned by Rachel and Shaun Watkins and as were having lunch at the car, Rachel stopped by and on hearing we were having a slow day, she called Shaun. Shaun then gave us great advice over the phone and following his steer (come back in the evening with a dry sedge on the dropper and nymph on the point) my son was in within a few casts when we came back to the beat in the evening. Lots of rising trout at Penlanole Pool amd Harrys Pocket. Missed way more takes than the two trout brought to the net and safely released. A great evening, significantly helped by Rachel and Shaun!!
Best Wishes
Mark

Beautiful evening fishing this stretch which is well maintained by the owner. A few rises at Harry’s Pocket but difficult to reach casting into the wind.
