The rain came down and the fish came on. Long leader nymphing caught most of the fish but a few were taken on a very soggy CDC dry. The average size of the Grayling was very good with the largest at 17" and the best trout at 16" fought so hard that at first I thought I was into a Grilse. By 1.30pm I was beaten by the rain and headed home with a grin on my face.

At last, a much overdue day when the wind didn't blow too much (and for most of the time hardly at all!), so at least bugs and fish were active. Even better, it was cloudy and warm. I fished from 8 until 6.30 p.m. and, amazingly, fish rose somewhere pretty well all day, and for most of the day there were some insects: sedge, midge and small olives / PWs. Trout were rising early but not the grayling, though by 10 a.m. they were looking up for sure and the odd one sipping. Most of the trout caught on the day were rising fish, whereas 60% of the grayling were not. I didn't resort to nymphs at all but just fished a size 20-14 HE emerger over gravels, in the foam and in the creases and the ladies obliged and came up for it. Most trout were 8-12" with the best a 14" 1.25 pounder. Most of the grayling were 11-13", fewer were 8-10" and the best a 17", non-rising, two pounder. A much needed, therapeutic session after a hard evening yesterday on one of club's waters on the Usk where "cracking the code" proved nigh impossible apart from a few trout willing to rise to spinners. So, a wonderful day in a beautiful place with such a variety of water. It was nice to be back. Also a big thank you to the owners for maintaining the access through the bracken so well. It makes such a difference for those of us of more advancing years!!

Thanks to Richard for our guest tickets. Fantastic day on a great beat, lots of fish to drys & nymphs with over half the fish coming with the Tenkara rod. Hard work taking casts between gusts of the downstream wind. 30 grayling to 1 1/2lbs, 3 trout to 1 1/2lbs and salmon parr.

Wet fly, full day, Welsh rain on and off throughout. Great beat with good access from the car park at the caravan place. Wading/river access is good when the river's relatively low. Largest fish caught approx 0.6lb and three other smaller fish. Lost another that felt larger.

Fantastic day on this beautiful beat. Warm and overcast provided the opportunity to start and fish the full day on dries. Starting of with the klink n dink which produced a few fish to the Nymph, but within a hour the fish were onto the dry. Klinkhammer special in #14 being the fly used all day. Had to change the fly half way through the day as the fish destroyed the first one. Not a great deal of fish seen rising, but they were pretty keen to rise to my fly if it went over then. A lot of caddis on the water with a few bwos. Fished to about 5pm and by then I was, knackered but extremely satisfied with the day. I said 30 grayling, but I stopped counting at twenty and that was a 1pm. Nothing of any great size biggest being grayling of 15" and brown of 14".

River was low and very clear. Had 2 nice grayling fishing nymphs, some small trout seen rising but they were very shy and spooky in the clear water. Only managed one small trout
No sign of any salmon. Saw a mink at the top of the stretch.

Warm and overcast day with the river running low. Started fishing at 0800 with very little fly life. Started with upstream nymphs fished deep that produced 2 small trout in the first 10 mins. A few grayling came to the net over the next couple of hrs then a hatch of yellow sally stoneflies got the fish looking up and they were pretty keen to take my pale olive emerger pattern. Fished till about 16:00 then called it a day. No fish of great size to mention predominantly from 8" to 15". Fantastic day.

All fish on nymph. Very little rising despite consistent hatches throughout the day. No evening rise although plenty of spinners falling. Lovely water, but low.

If I'm going to blank (which I did), there's no prettier stretch of river to do it on that this! Will be back.

The river conditions were slightly high and running quite fast. Not really suitable for dry fly fishing. Only caught the one trout.
