Fishing:Trout (River)

Heavy early morning rain cleared away to leave a bright, probably a little too bright, sunny afternoon. Fished from 11.30 to 5, the river was clean and healthy looking, although low it was still possible to find some deep water. The margins were full of fry and dragon flies were in profusion, no other fly life was seen and I saw no rises all day. Fished beaded nymphs, all the usual varieties, in all the likely looking places but didn't get a touch. A beautiful afternoon spent on a nice stretch of river, shame about no fish. Best bit of the day, a kingfisher.

Beat:Lower Clochfaen

Fished the bottom half of the beat which is fascinating to fish and holds some big fish. Unfortunately it’s only possible to fish the bottom two fields. It is near impossible wading up the river to make it past the suspension footbridge and if you opt to get out of the river and walk round that obstacle there are three fences with no stiles to navigate around the bridge up into the next field. Real pity as there looks to be plenty more fishing to go at but it’s not accessible and I didn’t want to damage fences trying to climb over them.

1st time trout fishing on this beat. There is some very nice water to go at. Only fished a couple of hours because of family commitments so only scratched the surface, but managed to land 3 WBT and lost 3 more. A trickle of flies hatching with the occasional trout rising. I will be back.
