Like the returns from previous days the river looked low and issues with brown scud collecting in slower water. However there was a terrific array of fly life including yellow mays. There were many fish rising but a lot were taking emerging nymphs below the surface. It took a long time to find a pattern which would work. A little black CDC worked rather than any upwings.
After a couple of brief connections my first hookup ended with massive battle an a PB for me Usk WbT of 20 inches. One other decent fish about 15 inches and 3 smaller samples ( which is good news for the future) . Despite many rising fish it was hard patient work but for me produced one memorable fish.

River looking rather low, sluggish and coloured by algal bloom. Despite these unpromising conditions and a chilly downstream breeze, we found pockets of surface action from the start, but the really spectacular action began at around 2.30 when the breeze finally dropped and some very good fish began dimpling in the glides. All fish taken on dry fly (Comparaduns and CDC patterns) and many of them a good size (3@17” and 6@14-15”. Wonderful fishing !

It fished really well - 12 brown trout all on dry flies. Some scattered mayfly hatches at various times, including a lot of yellow mayfly but strangely those were ignored - mostly caught on smaller size 16 ad 18s of three classic patterns: Lunn's Particular, Grey Duster and a Greenwell's Glory variant. However for much of the day most of the fish weren't on the mayflies - there were large numbers of tiny black flies, probably reed smuts and they were hitting those hard. Caught four of them on a size 20 Black Gnat at those times, fished on a very long and fine leader. Downside of that was that I lost one bigger fish on the take, probably had a wind knot in the line as it was quite windy and they often needed long casts with trees around - checked the tippet occasionally but obviously not often enough! Still a great day's fishing and they were a good stamp of fish - all between 9 and 14" and in great condition, two thirds of them in the 12-14" range. Thanks for a lovely day out - great fishing on a beautiful stretch of river.

2 hatches of olives and march Browns browns, each lasting about an hour brought fish to the surface. However we struggled to find a successful pattern. Eventually a size 20 F fly with a GRHE body proved successful. Best fish was around 13in but a larger fish broke me! Given that it was cold with a NE breeze, a surprisingly good day.

Bright, but otherwise good conditions. Plenty of fly life and several rising fish. Only one to the net but missed lost quite a few more. Lovely beat.
