Lovely to be on the Usk again. Fish very picky so a long leader was needed to get a good drag free drift.

Fierce sun all day, and very little sign of fish, the only regular riser being out of reach in water too deep to wade clear of the bank side trees. One pull and one hooked briefly.

A few rising fish but strong cold wind prevented any significant hatches of March Brown and LDOs. Missed fish feeding on black gnats under the willows. Lovely stretch of river. Just a few coppiced down areas would enable much easier access especially during times of high water levels.

The morning brought the last of the decent weather …. Whilst it stayed decent there were spasmodic hatches of LDOs, uprights, March browns and sedges. The fish were quick to respond and we winkled out 4 …. Nothing spectacular, all in the 9 - 14 inch class but all fit and hard fighting … all taken on grey size 14 parachutes and safely returned. Everything went quiet after the wind changed direction and became cold about 13.00.

Ashford House is a singular beat. As others have pointed out access points are limited but they are at the points where you get in to the river to catch the fish . Wading is essential but it’s not too tricky. The fish are stunning and it’s a lovely beat … wonderful wild flowers and bird life. Thanks for the fishing…

River nice height but wind all day made it hard. Some heavy hatches of March browns between 12.15-1.30pm and the trout did come up for them in short bursts. Numerous takes on dry flies but only landed one. Others on hares ear nymph, and again several missed and lost.

Water pushing through at a pace, and very cold. Sporadic fly life throughout the day, but no fish rising to them. DJ managed 2 trout, both caught with nymphs and safely returned.
