Very sadly, the river level, appeared too low to fish. There were no signs of activity (no rises and little insect activity as well).

I walked the length of the beat and did not see any fish (I am normally very adept at spotting fish) despite the water being clear. So it was not a day for fly-fishing unfortunately with the river so low and shallow. I just turned around and left it.

The river was running high and clear when we arrived. We tried fly but it was too fast and dangerous to wade so we set about bait fishing with red maggot.
Two good grayling were taken close under the banks in a deep section towards the bottom of the beat. A lively cold clear crisp day and very enjoyable despite the river height.

River was too high to be fishable but gradually dropping, almost at a good height by 3pm. One pull, probably a grayling, but nothing brought to net despite using a team of three heavy nymphs

River water fast and rising following steady rain. Fished from 2 to 4pm. Both fish caught on a gold-bead hare’s ear fishing in and around the foamy bits near the banks. Lost my net in the water halfway down the beat. Snowbee Rangers - medium, case someone finds it I would dearly love it back ! :-)

River low as everywhere at the moment; but running clear. Some very slippery bedrock at the top end - so be warned !

Several small trout on nymphs and a couple of grayling. My friend caught 2 other trout on a dry fly (olive pattern I think).

The directions seem a bit off - there is no gate "immediately" on the right after crossing the rail track (as per instructions).

Perhaps the Wye & Usk Foundation could check the access description and update it as it seems to be inaccurate to me ?

Given the river conditions we decided to head up the catchment…. But even that didn’t save us the river came up 6” throughout the day … not a good recipe for the fish to be settled or for us to wade, which is essential on this beat.

There was plenty of fly life ranging from tiny sedges to mayflies and there were brief periods when the fish were rising … we managed to winkle out 4 trout between 4 and 15 inches. Might only have been 3 fish unless one had a distinctive body double!

The main excitement was when JB hooked a 4 “ fish only to find his rod bending double … it was seized by an Irfon whopper who posed for a photo before letting go…. The plucky tiddler was unharmed.
