Beautiful river, tough fishing (perhaps as expected from the Irfon these days? Out of interest, is WUF still liming the river's headwaters, and if not, when did this project end? My own fishing diary says things on the Irfon started getting much more difficult from about 2007).

Anyhow, this visit produced 1x 8 inch trout, caught by swinging an emerger at range in an otherwise inaccessible bedrock area: intensive nymphing before and after in good-looking pools and runs showed up nothing at all. Still, I'll aim to be back!

A hot (22C) sunny day. Water very clear and low enough to see most of the 'skeleton' of the river. I fished from 1000hrs to 1800hrs but only had 2 fish to show for my effort (a small trout and a small grayling) but I missed many more (including what appeared to be a couple of sizeable trout). I was surprised that there wasn't a noticeable and distinct hatch of anything but there was a drip drip of caddis and mayfly emergers throughout the day. It was good to see a sandpiper flying upstream.

Nearly but not quite. Plenty of fly early in the day, and a few rising fish. It was one of those days where fish didn't stay attached, bumped off several and one was a good fish. There was a good mix of fly, olives and stoneflies, but the trout were occasional risers. Still a nice beat with plenty of fishable water.

The water looked great following a day of rain. Fished from 09.30 to 16.30. Walked up stream through the woods from the church and fished the field stretch, caught 10 Trout all on a red and black buzzer in the deeper pools.
Returned to the first field by the church and caught 6 small Trout on the buzzer, 2 larger Trout and a chub around 2 lbs. On a Adams.
A great day out despite the heavy rain showers.

Plenty of life hatching but almost no surface activity and no fish caught. Lovely day though in a beautiful spot!

River level within normal range and falling. A cold start to the day after an overnight frost. Little surface activity seen until a small hatch around midday. One of the trout was a healthy 16", caught on a generic sedge cdc emerger pattern (barbless), and returned. The other fish were between 6" and 8". A beautiful beat at this time of year - bluebells, primroses, wood anemone, and lots of cuckooflower which I ate happily with my cheese roll! And I saw a sandpiper flying low upriver. A lovely day (1000hrs to 1630hrs).

I really enjoyed fishing this beat. The scenery is stunning, and the water is varied which can suit any style of fishing. I did okay considering the conditions and fished weighted nymphs upstream "euro-style". The gauge was at .71 first thing in the morning, but a steady rain caused rising water with lower visibility as the day progressed.

I landed 5 OOS trout, two of which were really nice and over 16" all of them were healthy, lively and returned safely. I only managed 2 grayling - one around 5" and the other about 10" and had a few others hooked, but didn't get them in. I look forward to exploring more of this beat as I only saw maybe 1/4 of the water.

Overall a very enjoyable, yet cold and wet morning of fishing.

River level was good. A blustery day. I struggled to access river as I am too old for this now. Managed one grayling and one osb, leaded nymphs, but a better angler would have caught much more as conditions and river were pretty good. Probably my last ever river trip, unfortunately.

Fishing Passport Note : Take a look at The Colonels Water up at Llanwyrtyd Wells... very easy access here.
