A colder day with an east wind so the fishing was a little more difficult than expected. Fished the beat up and then down with wet flies. Caught a couple of 12" grayling in the Glaslyn Flat.

First time on this beat. Started with French Leader and heavy nymphs. Water at a good height.50 on the climary gauge. Good access to the river from this bank. 8 good sized Grayling from 14 to 18 inches and 2 oos trout either on the cased caddis or pink shrimp all taken in the fast deeper water with gravelled or shingled bottoms. I think this would be a great dry fly stretch if you get the conditions right on the day.

River level very low, at the start bright sunshine and light wind cloudy and rain later in day.Great part of the world to go fishing a day. 1 Grayling 10" and 1 OWBT 8" and a number of near misses. Fishing improved but sadly at the end of the day.

River low and clear. Grayling taken on dries, which made a nice change. Beautiful beat with lots of varied water. Wading was easy at this very low level.

River .57 on the gauge and dropping. Wind gusting to excess of 20 mph across the river into our faces making casting very difficult indeed at times. However, we persevered and we're rewarded with one o.o.s. trout each of around a lb and a grayling each of 1 1/2 lb plus eight fingerlings shared between us. DC caught his fish on drys and GC on nymphs.
As with all rivers, given the right conditions this beautiful stretch of water would reward the angler handsomely. As always, thanks to the owner and the Wye and Usk for the opportunity to spend the day here.

I found the water level pretty low on Saturday, but still the Irfon has been quite productive. I caught 11 browns, most of them good sized (1 pound)... and lost 2 big fish: 1 grayling, definitely over 3 punds, and 1 big brown. Fished only with nymphs; just saw a couple of fish rising all day.
I was supposed to fish also on Sunday but because of the heavy rain of the night before the river was too dirty and muddy.

Returned to Llanfechan as last time I was there the river was at least 2ft up. This time it was running well, and very clear. The weather started misty but, at about 11am the sun came out and stayed out, making conditions difficult. There was no wind to speak of and there was very little fly hatch.
Used weighted nymphs of various types, a white and pink tungsten bead czech nymph seemed to be most effective. I caught two grayling one about 10 inches and one about 5, however I lost numerous fish including a big brown trout and particularly big grayling. Not sure if it's because I was using a lighter rod, but either way it wasn't my day.
Overall a lovely beat with lots of fishable areas, took me all day to get to the top. One thing to note is that I agree with the need for a wading staff on this beat. I don't actually own one but I will get one after taking a rather nasty fall on the rocks. Despite the frustration of losing so many fish I had a great day.

This was my first time on the Irfon and I must say this stretch of the river is utterly delightful – definitely in my top three! The river, with its rapids, islands, pools, and gutters, has plenty of visual appeal. But beware the river bed, which in parts is quite treacherous, indeed throughout the day I used my wading staff (almost) as often as I did my rod!
Due to the characteristics of this beat, I had to change my technique quite frequently. In places, a small beadhead was the perfect choice but less than a cast away a team of two was required in order to stand half a chance. It was all very challenging – but extremely rewarding. Despite the air being thick with fly life I saw only two rises all day.

Fished from 10:00 till 19:00. In total, I managed nine trout: smallest eight inches, largest about fourteen inches.
