Similar amount of fish as on yesterday’s beat but smaller sizes. Was very difficult fishing this beat, poor access and the house had a large family there canoing through the river at lunchtime.
Wasn’t impressed to be honest but managed some fish

I had high hopes having read recent reports of big number catches and action on dries, so was a bit frustrated that it felt hard work to interest the fish and I could only tempt them with nymphs - half taken under a klink in shallower stretches and half much deeper, which was where the bigger fish seemed to be. There or tucked away - the best fish came from under a log in fast water. But there we are: all stunning looking fish, two other were parr. Great beat, will be back.

Water temp was 16.3. Air temp went from 17 to 23. Hardly any fly coming off the water but the fish seemed pretty willing to rise. Most fish took either a 14 hair ear emerger or a 16 hair ear nymph. It was great to see such a wide variety in the size of the fish. Largest fish, both graying and trout measured 12 inches.
The fish had apparently been reading up on where in the river they are supposed to be.
The 2 others were salmon parr.
The Holiday cottage was actually empty when I came to the pools n front of it but I didn’t realise till too late.

Fished from 7am until 1pm, when the heavens opened and I made a tactical withdrawal.
Fished upstream of bridge first where I landed the 2 trout and a solitary grayling. Fished French leader and nymphs.
Saw a lot of signal crayfish remains at the top of the beat, presumably the otters. Lifting a couple of rocks revealed plenty of others too.
Went back to car at 10 for a coffee, residents of cottage were just leaving, so was able to have a go at the water at the front of the cottage for the first time ever.
Landed another 11 grayling, this time on a mix of dry and duo.
At one point an otter swam across in front of me, underwater, no more than 6 foot away. It went into the reeds on the bank, where I assume it's young were as they proceeded to squeal with delight.
All grayling in the 6 to 8 inch range, both trout about 8 inches.

Unlike many of our rivers and, indeed, unlike much of the Lugg, even though it is incredibly low, the river at Lyepole still has a half decent flow. Away up river de bonne heure, with a tungsten nymph on point and a Purple & Snipe on dropper. Odd fish here and there until I got to some fast water below the weir - where I had around a dozen fish (mostly Trout) in a 30 minute purple patch. Did not fancy the downstream water; so went back up river, picking off stragglers with a dry, after an early lunch. Again, odd fish here and there until I picked up 4 Trout from a run where the nymph had failed to produce earlier

32.5 on the temperature gauge on the way home as this glorious summer of ours continues

The Lugg still has a good flow and looked healthy - and the fish responded. All on dries, best fish around 13". All safely returned.

13 Grayling
