Excellent fishing, plenty of fish @ the pound mark with the odd one or two pushing 1.5lb. Great mayfly hatch but only sporadic rising, possibly the cold wind put the fish down? Most fish caught on weighted nymphs.

This is pretty beat with a good variety of water to fish. There was a sustained but very sparse hatch of yellow mayfly but the fish were more interested in the olive and brook dun hatches. Fish taken on size 18 and 16 grey with brown hackle klinkerhammer and size 14 LBD dry flies. The water was quite coloured today and the fish seemed only periodically to be rising but were obliging when they did. I fished from 11 until 14:30 at which point I had not seem any rises for almost an hour. The trees were loaded with duns though so i think the evening would have been good fishing alas I had to get home.
6 Canoeists did come and launch their canoes at the bridge in the middle of the beat. I asked if they were sure that they were allowed to access the river but they assured me they were, they also said that they would only be heading downstream of the bridge so with plenty of water upstream and fishing time being my relaxing time i left them to it.
WUF Note: There is a right of navigation on the Lugg from Presteigne Bridge downstream. However, canoeists may not cross private land to access the river without consent of the landowner, and it is unlikely this group had such permission.

Chilly downstream wind held things back in the morning. 3 fish on leaded shrimp. 2 others on small green winged mayfly type. Fish rising above bridge after 2pm but not eating anything I had on. Very pleasant day for the first time on the Lugg.
Excellent access and pleasant wading.

Arrived to a light shower of rain and a stunning rainbow over the beat. Parked up and had a look over the bridge, the river was very high/fast flowing and coloured. But I'd traveled a long way so I put on my waders and walked the beat. The beat was pretty much unfishable, but still a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours.

Drizzle in the morning, brief sunshine in the afternoon and a chill wind. River was slightly coloured but looked fine. Saw perhaps half a dozen upwings come off the water around 1pm, but didn't spot any trout.
Fished nymphs without luck and wrapped up just before 3pm as I started to get a little cold. Despite the chill, a really beautiful spot and always enjoyable to spend a few hours in peace listening to the sounds of the river.
Most exciting moment of the day was while changing flies standing in the tail of the pool just upstream of the bridge. A cormorant that had clearly submerged itself a long way upstream suddenly surfaced a couple metres in front of me and took off in a panic. I nearly had a heart attack.

Ok,if you're reading this hoping for tips and guidance on how to tackle this water them I'm afraid I will be no help whatsoever!
This was my first ever attempt at fly fishing, my companion however is much more experienced than me having been once before. First I'd like to thank the WUF for making the whole experience possible, what a great organisation.
The day was a bright, chilly, very early spring day, the river looked glorious, clear with just a tinge of colour and running through at quite a pace and very cold.
Marc used a pink shrimp looking fly while I opted for a Grayling special and gold headed nymphs, by the end I think I was doing a reasonable impression of someone who knew what they were doing, a very steep learning curve. In all a fabulous day out in a wonderful location but no fish were caught. Maybe next time...

This was my first visit to this beat it is easy to find and parking excellent.
On a very cold morning I failed to catch on the lower half but after stopping for lunch and a hot drink at the car I managed four Grayling on the top half in the afternoon.
All fish caught on weighted nymphs in the deeper pools.
Three fish were around half a pound and one superb fish estimated over two pounds tested my 2 weight rod to the limit!
4 Grayling
