Started off over the hill, venturing towards the stones. This remains straight forward, and dry to access at the moment, including for SC, my 14 year old son. River levels all good, falling gradually through the day. Steady if not hectic sport to begin with, before the lunchtime lull that can occur in that swim. Troubled by more snags than usual, we had 10 chub or so up to 4 lb, and one lovely barbel of approx 9lb, all tempted on feeder and pellet method. We settled for a quieter pace of life in the afternoon, in the furthest downstream swim below the gate. The bites in here were less frequent, but when fish did arrive, they were of a healthier stamp, all chub - 4-5lb. SC on his first trip to the Wye, lost a big barbel at the net as the light closed in. He took this mishap much better than me, and vowed to return and catch his first barbel soon. He was king of the chub for the day which softened the blow somewhat. He's desperate to try for Pike, will need to do some research to find the best beats available.

Our first time to this beat.
We had read several previous reports about the walk up and down heart attack hill to avoid the land slide in the wood. This is no exaggeration, if you aren't adventurous and reasonably fit I would stick to the top end of the beat which has several nice swims with normal Wye type access.
Over all a very nice beat
Thanks to the Wye and Usk for all the great work in providing us with such great sport and scenery.

A very quiet and peacful location. Be warned, the 300 yrd walk from the car park requires a climb up a very steep hill, travel as light as you can. The river had settled following storm Amy, however the water temperature had dropped and was around 10oC. Fishing could probably be more consistant if the temperature had been settled for a bit longer rather than dropping quickly, with the Barbel coming later in the day.

I was expecting a better days fishing than I had, especially with the chub. I started by fishing the first swim next to the woods in the lower field but couldn't muster any interest. Moved into the woods and with the water level at about 1m at Mordiford the only swim that I could just about fish from was the luck stone (I think it's called). The overhanging trees restricted casting but managed a barbel at just shy of 9lb. It was too hard to fish easily so moved to the last swim in the field by the gate and settled there for a few hours. A decent chub of 4-5lb and then a fat 90cm pike which I guessed at 10lb plus on spicy sausage pellett! Maybe it was the pike disturbance but all went quiet after that.

River fining down nicely and showing 0.82 at Ross gauge .Steady all day with all fish caught on krill pellet and halibut pellet and crumb feeder. Barbel both around 6lb, chub 3 lb. Only fished lucky stones as others in lower field.
Great day, nice colour to the river and good to be back on Fownhope. Been too long since my last visit here. Access easy and plenty of choice and always chances of fish.

Fished the first two swims over the hill. River looked good. L, started well, but found a feeder stealing snag about 20 meters out, and lost a couple of fish.

Long walk - will pack lighter next time!

We were worried in advance that storm Amy would wipe out the day, but in the end conditions were really good. One of us fished the lucky stone all day for three barbel between 4 and 7lbs. Took quite a bit of leading about to find the deeper hole.

The other one fished the first swim downstream of the woods and had a busy day with the chub. Started small but got bigger as the day went on. Probably averaged 3lb but had a couple towards the end of the day that were well over 4lbs. Thought it was going to be a chub only day, but just before I packed up a 3ft twitch resulted in a barbel of about 8lb, making it a good day overall.
