Second time I’ve visited this beat, the first time I was disappointed as the beat map shows access all the way down one bank almost all the way back to Newbridge-on-Wye however this isn’t the case as the path ends at a house a short way into the woods and accessing the river is almost impossible.
This time I crossed the footbridge and found the river much more accessible. Today though the river was very powerful after recent rain and still carrying a little colour, wading was quite difficult and finding feeding fish even more so. I eventually found a few fish rising very intermittently in a slack behind a fallen tree, I managed to rise one to a dry fly, which frustratingly I missed, this turned out to be the only chance I was to get. The wind started to get quite wild blowing leaves into the river by the thousand so gave up and went for a warm and a pint instead.

Fished at Doldowlod , the weather was far from Ideal. So many leaves coming down, as well as branches falling from the trees all around me, but I persevered, it got quite impossible to fish down and across. So went to plan B, Czech nymphing did a little better in handling the conditions, 1 nice out off season brown trout, and 3 good grayling. Perseverance paid off but as the day progressed it started to get a little worse, but never mind I was quite happy with the result. All fish returned safely..
Is it possible to have signs up to see if we are in the right place for parking.

WUF note: We review the directions and parking arrangements annually, and look into putting up any relevant signage.

River up a little since I fished it on Tuesday ( 0.75 ddol farm gauge ) and thankfully the leaves had all gone by. Fished nymphs in the gutter and pools on the lower section ( too deep to access the top pool ). About midday lots of sedges and upwings about but still nothing rising! Had to leave at 2 o'clock but its been a great week back here in wales, many thanks WUF. grayling to 14" and trout to 12"

Water back down to a nice height now ( 0.65 )and very clear. Fished indicator and nymphs in the gutter and the pools along the lower stretch. This is my preferred method here, but I notice a lot of people do well on dries but I rarely see any rises at all here even when there are sedges and olives about ! grayling to 16" and trout to 15" but mostly 10"

28th September – Doldowlod
The weather forecast was slightly challenging and river conditions uncertain so we left booking until this morning – what a wonderful flexible system! True to suspicions the Llanstephan gauge was showing 2ft 6 inches so that area was out – and Usk was also up. That made me wonder if most of the rain was coming down the Irfon and/or Ithon – and the fact that the Rhyader gauge was at 1 ft 3 inches confirmed that the upper river was going to be fishable – just about!
When we stood on Llanwrythl bridge to assess prospects at 11am the river looked perfect so we were up for a good day – and so it proved. Accessing at Ddol farm to the lower part of the beat I dropped in to my favourite location – only to hook 5 fish in first 6 casts and for them all to come off! Have they been practicing again? Needless to say perseverance brought rewards and we ended up with 24 grayling up to 15 inches, all to dries and safely returned. No persistent hatches although some large needle flies and sedges around. As usual the two best fish got off – a significant brown that broke me when it slashed at a skating fly on a tight line, and a big grayling that broke Jimbo when it got below him in to fast water.
Once again Doldowlod comes up with the goods….many thanks again for excellent fishing.
