Thursday 18th August Doldowlod
Back on a favourite beat. The otters got there before us however with a family of 3 playing half way up the beat. Wonderful to watch – see video on Youtube.
Not much surface activity but a few fish around in the usual spots. 13 to hand between us including trout and grayling to 17 inches. River looking in good nick despite the long dry summer but heres hoping for rain soon.

After blanking the day before we fished the gully in the lower stretch. Changed tactics and fished euro style nymph, managed a couple of fish. Again masses of fly life only saw a handful of fish rising throughout the day.

Fished spiders and nymphs, started at the top of the beat, didn't realise that access to the lower stretch was so far. Fished the lower stretch in the afternoon, didn't see any rising fish although there were masses of flies coming off the water. Unfortunately no fish caught.

The day started bright and hot but with plenty of fishy activity. About 3 pm the sky went black and it rained. A lot. Hid under trees during the heaviest rainfall and managed to catch another one or two when the rain was not coming down quite as much but by 7 pm it had gone quiet and everything was wet so retreated back to the car.

We don’t usually come this far up the catchment this early in the year but as it has been an early spring we made an exception. We wondered how we were going to avoid the out of season grayling that were prolific at Gromain the previous week – but we need not have worried!
There were a few flies coming off all day – Yellow May Duns and Blue Winged Olives – but only a few fish rose, and none in the usual prolific bottom pool. We didn’t cross over to fish the upper part of the beat today, but still managed to get 5 trout up to 14” to our dry flies. All safely returned….

I was hoping for more water coming from the Elan but that was not the case yet, the river is on it’s bones.I started catching Grayling using a Spanish leader so stopped and started prospecting with the dry.
The biggest Trout was a very fat 17” which put a tremendous fight. That fish alone made the day worthwhile.
