Both rods - Blank. Really wet day - river conditions from run off through the top stream made matters worse throughout. By mid afternoon the water was very silted.
Although in red in the instructions there was no sign of any book at the gate.

Touched a couple of small brown trout but the lovely bright day, low river made the fishing very tough. Stunning stretch though, perfect for a half day. The signpost first right after you cross the Usk no longer says Abercynrig but still easy to find your way.

We had a fairly leisurely start to our day with breakfast at the Wellington in Brecon, which was superb. We made the short drive down to the river at 9am and got fishing soon after. Bright conditions with a very low and clear river Usk made for challenging fishing but it was a glorious day and fishing in t-shirts and waders was a real treat! Fish were rising occasionally and the first fish of 10 inches was taken on a small olive imitation. Dry flies were the order of the day but we didn't catch two fish on the same fly! Every fish seemed to prefer a different fly which was strange. However we landed some cracking fish, the biggest was around the 20 inch mark, we had others at 18 inches that spent more time out the water than in! 16 inches and a couple at 15 inches. Lovely day, lovely beat - will return!

First trip to the Usk with the background of beacon's a magical setting. Shame about the weather hailstorm and snow one minute then the sun came out for half an hour and a olive hatch with brought on the fish.caught a lovely little brown that fought every inch to the net.looking forward to my return.

Unseasonably cold with cold downstream wind and hail and rain squalls. WT 8.5C. AT from 6 -10C. Cloudy with some sunny intervals later. Good hatches, mainly olives starting around 12.30pm and continuing intermittently until around 3.30pm. Caught 3 trout, best 1lb 6oz on dry olive, at about 1.30pm, during an intense hatch. Generally, the better fish were 'keeping their heads down', probably as a result of the chill, and most rising fish seemed small. It was encouraging to see the insect life and the numbers of small fish.

1 Fish caught on a nymph, 2 Fish caught on a dry. There was a few good hatches of mayflies, however there seemed to be a lot of small fish that were very hard to hook.

The Wye and Usk Foundation was a perfect resource for us to find as novice fly fishers.
The wind and temperatures meant that very few trout were rising, but to have such a beautiful stretch of the Usk to ourselves on a generally sunny day was a privilege.
We will be back!
