One trout of 12oz, returned. Fought hard for an hour and 35 minutes before I overcame it with the help of local farm hands and a tractor.

Spent a morning fishing the Eastern Cleddau at Llawharden. The fishing is challenging in the best sense. Had a great time scrambling in and out of the water, made plentiful use of the wading staff and barely made a conventional overhead cast. Fished a duo with the dry fly as indicator and a bead head nymph underneath. All fish came to the nymph. As well as the 4 half pounders that came to hand, I lost 3 others so it was never dull. If, like me, you enjoy working out how you are going to get your flies into position when casting is difficult, then you will enjoy this stretch. I went home having had a great morning. Will definitely be back. PS all fish were returned.

Fished the eastern Cleddau beat, no fish caught or seen. Water was very low. Although nothing was caught the surroundings are beautiful and worth the trip.

After a gap of some thirty years, I returned to my childhood river - the Western Cleddau - where I learnt to fly fish with a bamboo rod (which - even in the 80s - was an antique). I was worried that years of careless slurry poisonings had cleared the river of trout, but I was pleased to see several small fish rising, and darting away at my clumsy approach.

The water was low and surprisingly very clear. In some stretches with the Ranunculus flowering, it could have been a chalk stream. The banks were more tree-lined and overgrown than I remember . If you don't have waders, it would be hard to land a fly on the water.

It was after sunset before I managed to connect with a fish. A 6-7 inch brown trout took my size 20 Parachute Adams. I was so pleased with this fish, out of all proportion to its size. Can't wait to go back.

Lovely river with, perhaps, a bit of extra water and colour after some rain but don't know the river so only guessing. Probably a spate river? Good access and even wooden walkways over boggy ground - so well used. Perhaps more of a migratory river? Only fished an hour or so as had grandson with me who wanted to get back to the beach - uggh! He was wearing a multi-coloured T-shirt so blamed that for lack of action.

Went for the Brownies as so early in the season and tried various tactics but no sign of any fish. A few olives were coming off. Tried duo with a klink and bead head nymph underneath and larger Czech nymphs fished deep. Lovely river though and I have seen some nice fish rise on this river in the past. The cold wind probably didn't help.
