Arrived towards the end of a sparse mayfly hatch and caught one, another off the hook - then very tough for the rest of the day with nothing much happening. Should have started earlier in the morning! River still very low, but a beautiful beat and obviously well-managed - not a scrap of Himalyan balsam or Japanese knotweed to see for about a mile and lots of young fry and fingerlings in the margins which was nice to see after such a terrible summer.

Despite heavy showers and a rising river trout were rising and sipping throughout the afternoon. At what, my old eyes could not see? Went through all the likely flies in my box but not one induced a single sip. Probably should have fished nymphs but it was interesting to try the dries.
