It felt like December rather than April with ant wind to add to the pain

Fished for 3 hours. No action at all

Sporadic hatch of LDO. Very little surface activity. Spider patterns seemed to work best

Cool, light northerly wind, and very little hatch - saw maybe 4 rises all day. The spider patterns, however, worked quite well - got 2 fish up to 14 inches, lost 2 more, and had quite a few rises and plucks, all before about 3pm when things went even quieter.

Wow the weather! 35mph winds funnelled in a downstream direction. Heavy downpours and hailstorms I thought might break my rods! Somehow it was still great fun.
4 to a drab LDO nymph. The odd flurry of LDO during calmer periods and one very brief MB showing. Only one rise seen between 8am to 2pm
Had one huge swirl a rod-length to my right but turned out to be a mink going about its business.

Had a great day on the river, very hard conditions, hot and very bright sun. No fish rising, a few large dark olives hatching.
Sadly no fish.

A day to remember on a simply magnificent stretch of the Usk.

We booked three rods, two via the WUF and one direct from Penpont House when we arrived at the venue. The beat is a fantastic mix of gutters, riffles, deep pools, and flats. Unfortunately, a very strong upstream wind and bright sunshine meant dry fly wasn't an option for us. Despite a decent hatch, we only saw one fish rise all day, so we stuck to nymphing and spiders in the faster runs and pocket water, which proved very productive. We landed 9 fish between us and lost a few more. The fish seemed to switch off during the afternoon meaning we caught nothing after 2pm.

Most of the fish we landed were around the 1lb mark, with two beautiful Usk specimens probably just over 2lbs, which made our day. Our first time on the Usk and it most certainly won't be our last!
