A beautiful day on a pristine beat with lots of varied water. We were glad to be making the most of what seems to be an extended summer. We barely saw a rise all day but by prospecting in the faster water managed to catch all the fish off the top on a Jonathan Barnes soft hackle dry. Somehow this fly seems to rise fish when they aren’t even taking naturals. A firm favourite. All fish came from the faster shallower water and all the trout were from the very fast water. We missed many many more and also lost a better trout. Nothing huge came to the net but once again we had a fantastic day. Thank you Wye and Usk.

Two Grayling (both approx 10 inches) taken on a tungsten bead GRHE. I had a few other tugs, all near the bottom at the end of runs.
No serious rain for a long time so the river was low and clear.
I used a 7foot, 3# rod with a nymph and a spider.

Arrived at midday to a beautiful warm day with light winds. River in perfect condition. Only saw two fish rise the whole day due to little insect life. Managed one Grayling on hairs ear gold head in the fast water.
Such a beautiful and wild river with kites flying overhead and dippers in and out of the water.

Even perfect water conditions and the flies so kindly given to us by PB yesterday were not enough for GT to catch a fish. More patience, time on the water and skill/lessons needed we think!

My memory must be fading – was thinking it had been too long since we had one of our red letter days on a main river beat but checking feedback it was only 2018.
We were very hopeful today – it hadn’t rained for a week and the day dawned softly with light grey cloud cover – usually a good omen. All that was needed then was for there to be some insect life and the fish to co-operate.
The previous evening the river was at 1ft 7ins on the Llanstephan gauge and it hadn’t dropped much by the time we arrived. This meant that the water was pushing through and wading was so say the least challenging – right at the limit of what we are comfortable with in fact, although it dropped to 1ft 4ins by the time we left. There was a mixed hatch in progress when we arrived and there was a golden period of a couple of hours when despite there being no rises to the hatch a dozen fish came to hand – a pretty even mix of wbt and Ladies. After that there were a few rising fish but nothing consistent – yet we managed a final tally of 22, with the best wbt a 14 incher and the best lady a solid 17 inch fish. There was a much more intense hatch of small olives as the evening approached but no real response from the fish.
We also had the pleasure of the company of the fishery owners who were glamping in their wooden caravan idyll at the river side. A real pleasure to chat and put the world to rights. Here’s hoping for tight lines for you the next day and good weather for the rest of your stay.
