Day 1: Three of us ventured out taking advantage of the high barometric. Glorious weather, sunny, low wind, ideal for casting. Strong sunlight is something that fish do not prefer but it is not so much of an issue in early Spring. The water temperature was 8C. Still on the low side but as the day warmed up a trickle of large dark olives and March browns started hatching after 12:30'.
As usual, fish were difficult to tempt requiring very long leaders, constantly changing flies and delicate presentations. We managed 7 very lively trout, some on dries and some on spiders. A memorable day out in peaceful surroundings.

Pleasant 3 hours with a few olives coming off just after mid day, but no sustained hatch.
All but one came to traditional winged wets fished just sub surface. Biggest a pound but all of the fish in good condition for the time of year.

It was a cool (10 degs) and mainly heavily overcast day. A sparse hatch of midges, olives plus the odd march brown came off between about 12n and 1:30pm. The trout were mildly interested and a few rose (albeit most were oncers). I got one trout of between 13 & 14” on a dry (16# gingler) but to my surprise nothing on nymphs. My mate fared similarly. A lovely beat, I enjoyed fishing it.

Typical early March day on the Usk. Grateful the river was at a good fishable height given the rain recently. Reasonable hatch of LDOs & a few March Browns between 1-2pm. Hooked and lost one right in the tail of a pool on a dry. Then landed another. Not a monster but got the season up and running.

Having lost a decent salmon on the Wye yesterday, it was a case of getting back on the horse today albeit on a very shrunken river Usk. Managed to tempt one to the surface in the clear water with a Greenwell but the only way to get their attention seemed to be by presenting a nymph tight to the bank under overhanging foliage. Needless to say my fly box will need a bit of replenishment. Almost exactly a year ago I had a fabulous days fishing here with the trout on the take for hours on end, but it was pretty dour today. The thundery conditions didn’t help, heavy showers during a challenging days fishing.

Lovely beat, only one trout of about 3/4lb on a nymph in the faster water. Saw plenty rising but they were sporadic and I couldn’t work out what they were taking, tricky in the low clear water too.
