A sunny morning and warmer than it has been. I get the impression that the fish are barely out of Winter mode. Not much food in the drift and little bug life. There was a short window when bugs did start to come off - March browns I think - and one or two good fish did start rising, an opportunity I promptly messed up. The rise probably lasted no more than half an hour. I did manage two fish on a single nymph fished deep. Both were clonkers. The first was two and a half and fought hard and fast. The second was a tired old warrior of three and a half. I don’t know who was more shocked.

Dufnant is a beautiful, secluded feeling place even on a day that started gray and finished in proper stair-rod downpours. I found it quite hard going, not straightforward to fish - especially on a decidedly not dry fly day - and a tough wade to boot. For the first hour I neither caught nor saw or trout even in some promising riffly water. Then I caught one - a beautiful purple brownie of a pound plus, then another, and so it went. And I caught more or less steadily thereafter. But the day (the week? the year?) was made by one terrifying, glorious beast of 3lb 2oz.

Not much doing - a handful of smaller fish, up to 14", on duo PTN, then a bit of a late evening rise, when a size 14 Grey Wulff worked a bit. Very accommodating hosts, and a beautiful beat and surroundings, including very vocal sandpipers (who clearly had a nest)

Small trout caught on nymph in tail of Mary Anne pool (and released). We received an excellent service from the Fishing Passport who were v helpful booking an evening beat at the last minute on Friday 24 May. We had a wonderful weekend of 2.5 days fishing on the Usk, such a beautiful river. Thank you Wye & Usk Foundation!

Trickle hatch of various species but in very low numbers, so no rises. Had few on nymphs in the fast water. Extremely difficult wadding in moderate flows in the upper part of the beat.

Missed a few takes nymphing, hooked two and landed one. No fish rising. Beautiful beat.
