Morning conditions difficult with light rain clearing towards midday. The river was coloured and a little higher than usual due to recent rain. One brown trout (~1.25 lb) taken on the retrieve to a small olive nymph just below the first weir upstream of the town. A second brown (~1.5 lb) taken at the top of the stretch, late afternoon on a dry grannom variant.
Other notable sightings, two foxes drinking at the rivers edge on the opposite bank, unfortunately they were swiftly followed by a large mink to the same spot!
A lovely days fishing, although the banks are very overgrown, compared to when I used to fish this stretch some years ago, making the river inaccessible in a lot of sections at the upper end of the town water.

Fished until midday, just upsteam of the town bridge, in persistent rain and blustery wind. River rising slowly with a little more colour. Both fish took a black bead head red tag nymph

Trout to 18” on a streamer. Water rose two feet and coloured up over course of the day so no rising fish for once. Plenty of Shad in the river.

Fished 3 hours up till dark. 3 x trout: 2 at 6 inches on an olive nymph, one much larger at around 2.25lb taken on a dry. Very busy rise just before it was too dark to see, otherwise quite difficult fishing. Several pairs of sea lampreys seen making their redds, aswell as the remains of a recently deceased one. I saw other sea lampreys this morning on the Wye, under Foy bridge.

A few fish seen but none rising to fly despite plenty of fly life on the river. Water was clear and flowing nicely although bottom below pumping station was covered in green slime. Above pumping station rock bed was clean and clear, need we say more.

A day of three parts. In the morning the weather was benign, but the trout weren't moving. As I stopped for a sandwich the cold front arrived, a cool breeze and showers. And in those conditions I caught a nice trout on a downstream nymph in broken water. Then the weather cheered up again, a few trout started rising, but not in places I could reach with a dry fly. Fascinating!
