This is a lovely long beat with a real variety of water. Wasn't expecting too much as it was quite hot, very sunny and low water conditions, but the day started really well with four fish by early afternoon - three of them nice ones too of 14-15". Three on nymph, but another to a Parachute Yellow May dun. Some decent hatches of yellow mays, small olives, and even a smattering of mayfly but the trout hadn't switched on to the latter yet. The dippers and yellow wagtails were having a field day though. The odd fish rising and taking but they were a bit more subdued due to the weather I guess. The second half of the day became a bit of a carnival really with loads of people on the river, even though I avoided the central town bit - three other trout fishermen, swimmers, a flotilla of boys in rubber rings, an inflatable dinghy, an air mattress plus swimmers, parties on the banks. dogs jumpong in and out etc. - although I'm not sure if the trout minded too much, I guess they are fairly used to it all. I was a bit unlucky in that five more fish came off the hook - but a lot of it became very technical with large pods of small fish around the church rising to really tiny stuff, don't think I really found quite the right fly either despite going down to tiny 20s. The low water with little flow also made presentation more difficult, but it was absorbing fishing. Lovely beat - think I may avoid a sunny Sunday next time though just for a little more peace and quiet, although great to see many other folks enjoy and value the Usk besides us flyfishers!

Had one take but it threw the hook on a gold head, black nymph. Picked the wrong day today. Far too bright.
25○c and surprisingly windy.

River very low and gin clear . Trout seemed to be held up in any deeper sections of the river . Nymphing produced nothing in the streamy water . All trout were on dries after 1 pm targeting the limited rising fish . All came to size 18 midge patterns . I noticed a swirl in one of the pools and a huge salmon went fully airborne , without doubt the biggest salmon I've seen for a long time. Estimate would be in the 30lb - 40lb range .

River looking great. Arrived around 10:30ish. Abundant insect life but nothing rising. Fished the faster water with various nymphs with no luck. Moved up past the pumping station, still no luck. However one of the pools further up fish were rising ALOT! This was about 3pm. Fished a couple of emergers and one was taken and he put up a great fight, about 8-10 inches. Sadly he shook the hook which was annoying. Nothing after that.
Went back to the faster water and fished another emerger and got another take but again shook the hook pretty quickly, think he was a bit bigger.
Even though I blanked…. Again it’s a great beat well worth the day out

Fish in good condition. 1x 14” 1x8””. None taken. Water low and very clear. Both fell to Hares Ear #16 with flash back thorax cover. Fished from upstream limit to weir within glides. Both caught by 10:30. Little activity after that
