The other angler was my friend OM who will make a separate return. WE really liked this beat - a beautiful late morning and afternoon. Always a challenge. Mine were caught with small dry fly. For some reason the later afternoon proved more difficult.

Lovely day's fishing - weather cloudy with quite long sunny intervals, fish rising fairly intermittently along the beat and often tempted by small F fly if well presented, otherwise taking GRHE cast upstream into promising currents. 4 brownies caught and returned, up to 1lb and in excellent condition - numerous missed takes! A classic stretch of water, and a pint at the Bell to finish.

River in great condition. It was overcast but wind a bit cold. Fished from 11:30 - 17:30 and fairly steady hatch of olives coming off all day. Saw an odd larger fly and one yellow dun before leaving. A parachute Adams was a good imitation for most of the beasties hatching but takes were quick and I missed more than connected. The largest trout was around 1 lb but the stamp was more around 6 - 8 oz mark. Also one or two parr but generally those fell off. Grayling came to pt nymphs fished underneath the dry. The largest was good size around 12 - 14 oz. Overall fish seemed in pockets so you need to work though the whole beat to find fish. Once you found fish there were more in those pools however each time one was caught you seemed to have to move on. Plenty of exercise so I was tired (in a good way) at the end of the day.

Stayed for 2 nights at the Bell at Skenfrith on one of their DB&B deals. Excellent.
Clear water but with very few fish showing on the surface. That said, all but one of my fish were caught by casting to rising fish. 4 on a CDC F fly on top and the other 2 (including the Grayling) on a green gold head nymph.
2 of the trout were 1lb plus, the remainder were about 4-6 ounces. Very enjoyable day.

Fantastic day on the river, myself and my fishing buddy both taking our first brown trout ever!
Arrived after early morning rain to find the river quite low with a very slight tinge of colour, it looked perfect as we made our way to the far end of the beat. I caught almost straight away on a gold head nymph with Marc catching a little while later from a deep eddy close to the bank also on a gold head nymph. Marc then took two more from a fast run while I lost a good fish on a dry fly!
Lunch in the Bell was great, highly recommended, then back to the fishing, Marc had to leave so I fished on taking another off the surface on a dry fly and later losing a fish on a nymph when it jumped clear of the water and shed the hook.
All in all a fantastic day, will be back for more.

This was my first visit to the Monnow and to fishing in Wales. Time permitted me only to fish for a few hours in the afternoon. The river was low and I saw no other anglers. There was no hatch and so nothing taking on the surface. All fish were caught on nymph out of two pools with a decent depth. The best fish was 12 inches. All were in good condition. A most enjoyable session.
I stayed at the Bell at Skenfrith and would have welcomed the chance of being able to fish on the 25th as well.

No fish were caught, no rising trout at all but a sensational setting with stunning views. Water was quite low and gin clear. Quite challenging conditions (trees etc.) for a novice like me but absolutely loved the few hours away from it all.
A few lessons perhaps are required. . . does anybody know anyone local to Cheltenham that would give some tuition?
